In fact, he warned us twice that a man caught participating in one crime had powerful reasons to exaggerate another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may be trying to trade information for leniency,\u201d Pike said.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you believe there\u2019s enough to look into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe there\u2019s enough to ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all a careful detective would give us.<\/p>\n<p>It was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Pike sat beside the window with his notebook open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin says six years ago your father paid him to photograph Eleanor Lawson meeting an accountant named Daniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn made a sound through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel asked, \u201cDid Martin stage those photographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe followed Mrs. Lawson and Mercer to a hotel where Mercer had rented a conference room. Voss says he entered the building separately, waited until Mercer left, then positioned himself near Mrs. Lawson so another photographer could capture them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s all?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike turned a page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral days later, Voss says he was instructed to enter Mrs. Lawson\u2019s car and place a second phone inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith messages on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFake messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what Voss claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn whispered, \u201cGerald showed me messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike glanced toward the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRomantic. Explicit enough to humiliate her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere they supposedly between Eleanor and Mercer?\u201d Pike asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective wrote something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss claims he did not create those messages. He says Gerald gave him the phone already prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s voice tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Voss, he was paid to continue following her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil she died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he there when her car crashed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss says no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief I expected did not come.<\/p>\n<p>Because his next sentence followed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he says someone else was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss refused to name them until he speaks with an attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel cursed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Pike closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need all of you to understand something. This has moved beyond tonight. If your mother\u2019s death becomes part of an active investigation, do not confront your father about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLittle late for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective\u2019s gaze settled on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen be serious enough to stay alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Pike turned to Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said an envelope belonging to you is missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescribe the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall brass key. Round top. Number forty-seven stamped on a paper tag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother outside what we think is Northgate Storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike wrote that down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know which unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know forty-seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know whether Dad has another key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly why civilians are not going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s jaw flexed.<\/p>\n<p>Pike leaned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Lawson, your father allegedly attempted to drug your wife tonight and stage evidence of infidelity. A man who participated says there may be connections to your mother\u2019s death. This is not the moment to prove anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>Pike left.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn ended the call only after promising she would come to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later, Rachel was discharged with instructions not to drive or stay alone. My own results showed only trace exposure, likely from the amount I had briefly held in my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel insisted we go to a hotel.<\/p>\n<p>I refused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald knows every hotel your company uses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere he wouldn\u2019t expect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows where you live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe\u2019s place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald has been photographing me there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That eliminated home.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn arrived before we solved it.<\/p>\n<p>She entered through the emergency department wearing a trench coat over clothes that looked hastily chosen. She hugged Rachel first, then Gabriel, and finally me.<\/p>\n<p>When she pulled back, I saw tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have believed Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew what to say.<\/p>\n<p>She took us to the house of a friend who was traveling overseas. The property was twenty minutes away, tucked behind an ordinary row of townhouses. Gerald would have no obvious reason to search there.<\/p>\n<p>By dawn, none of us had slept.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel sat at the kitchen table studying photographs from the envelopes. Rachel drank water slowly. Evelyn stood at the window.<\/p>\n<p>I called Detective Pike once.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:42, he returned the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every conversation stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel put the phone on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas anything inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecords.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial documents. Photographs. Digital media. Personal papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cMom\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome appear to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel gripped the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything about the crash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still processing the contents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Dad there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know about the unit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Pike added, \u201cBut someone tried to access it at 3:17 this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe facility manager says the person used an old key that no longer fit because the locks were replaced last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel touched her empty pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you get video?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it Gerald?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reviewing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That meant yes or maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, the missing envelope had led someone directly there.<\/p>\n<p>Pike promised to contact us when he could release more.<\/p>\n<p>He called again that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>This time his voice sounded different.<\/p>\n<p>More controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Lawson left a letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor who?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel, Rachel, and Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody mentioned Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>Pike said the letter was being preserved as evidence but allowed us to come to the station and read a scanned copy.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived separately.<\/p>\n<p>The detective placed three printed pages on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s handwriting was elegant and narrow.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel touched the first page but did not lift it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel began crying before she read a word.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stood behind her.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed near the door.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was dated eight days before Eleanor\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>It began simply.<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s shoulders tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor wrote that she had discovered Gerald had been moving money through several companies using forged approvals. She had confronted him privately. He denied it, then accused her of betraying him by investigating.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote about the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The phone.<\/p>\n<p>The rumors.<\/p>\n<p>How quickly people believed a humiliating story when the evidence appeared to arrive before the accused person had time to speak.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Gabriel reading the words his mother had written six years earlier, describing almost exactly what had nearly happened to me.<\/p>\n<p>He had to stop halfway down the second page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel took over.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor wrote that Gerald had underestimated one thing.<\/p>\n<p>She had kept copies.<\/p>\n<p>Invoices. Transfer records. Emails. Names.<\/p>\n<p>One name appeared repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The accountant had helped her trace money into something called Calder Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Pike interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are already checking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor said Mercer had warned her to leave immediately.<\/p>\n<p>She refused.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted enough evidence to protect Gabriel and Rachel from whatever happened next.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the paragraph that changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>If Gerald tells you I am unstable, remember that he said the same thing when I first questioned the accounts. If he tells you I have been unfaithful, remember that he began collecting photographs only after I confronted him. And if something happens to me on the road, do not accept the first explanation merely because it arrives quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stood so abruptly his chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wrote it eight days before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes it important evidence.
