Even Rachel\u2019s monitor seemed suddenly too loud, the steady electronic rhythm filling the space where his answer should have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn inhaled shakily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I heard police were at the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald called me first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel mouthed, Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Chloe had brought a man into the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald had been preparing the story even before Gabriel arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued, \u201cHe said you were about to find out and that I might need to come over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you would need family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at the schedule on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>If G hesitates, use Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want you to say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I had seen Chloe with someone before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s voice became flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cWhy would he think you would?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cBecause I did once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s next words came slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore your mother died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hospital room seemed to narrow around us.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn asked whether Gerald was there.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel said no.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen listen carefully,\u201d she said. \u201cYour father has spent years making sure none of you had the entire story at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat story?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother tried to leave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at the wall as if it had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn heard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t think Gerald would let her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this have to do with tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn sounded older than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor found irregularities in one of the family companies. Money transferred through shell accounts. Contracts approved with signatures that weren\u2019t hers. She confronted Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Company money.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s outburst upstairs returned to both of us at once.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told her she misunderstood. Then he told the board she was under stress. Then he told friends she was drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cMom barely drank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you stop him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause at first I believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my sister-in-law. Gerald was my brother. He showed me messages. Photographs. He said Eleanor was seeing someone and becoming reckless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where did the evidence come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald created it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>A spouse became inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald manufactured betrayal.<\/p>\n<p>Then he controlled who saw the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn recognized my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor not understanding what he was doing until tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell us about Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald hired a man to be seen leaving a hotel room where Eleanor was meeting an accountant. Then he had someone photograph them from across the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn accountant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was trying to trace missing funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel repeated it as though trying to recover a memory.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pressed her fingers to her temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued before we could pursue it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald showed the photographs to Eleanor\u2019s friends. To your grandparents. To me. He made sure everyone heard his version before Eleanor realized there was a story to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>He had tried to do exactly the same thing to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Gabriel see them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You and Rachel were still young enough that Eleanor tried to keep you out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel laughed once, bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was twenty-four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were working overseas. Gerald told you your mother was depressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after the photographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe confronted Gerald. Two days later, she called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s voice broke for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she had proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cProof of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money. The staged photographs. Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she died before she could give it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word died fell heavily in the room.<\/p>\n<p>No one said accident.<\/p>\n<p>I realized all three Lawsons were avoiding it.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel finally asked, \u201cAre you saying Dad killed Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn answered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying I stopped believing I understood what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>But it did not comfort anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel touched the pocket where her missing envelope should have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photo in my envelope showed Mom outside a storage building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat storage building?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Concrete walls. Blue door. Number forty-seven painted beside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sharp intake of breath came through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother rented a storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnit forty-seven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel asked, \u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthgate Storage. Old industrial district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it still exist?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel was already searching on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was Mom storing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn whispered, \u201cShe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the key Rachel had found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel\u2019s envelope also contained a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at his sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the envelope. Then I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone understood who had been near her.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took it,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Dad saw that drawer open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have kept it somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were drugged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nurse entered and told us the preliminary toxicology screen suggested a sedative but not enough to identify exactly which medication had been used. More testing would take time. Rachel was stable, but the doctor wanted to observe her for several hours.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse left.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn was still on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel,\u201d she said, \u201cdo not go back to that house alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Dad would hurt me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think your father panics when he loses control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked toward the curtain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only one I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhy did he keep the photograph and key in an envelope with Rachel\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn considered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he meant to give them to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr maybe he was keeping track of what belonged to whom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the envelope marked CHLOE \u2014 MIDNIGHT.<\/p>\n<p>A filing system.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald categorized people as problems with assigned solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel paced once across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mom rented the storage unit six years ago, wouldn\u2019t it be gone by now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn said, \u201cShe paid ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accountant.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel suddenly looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where I heard the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Mom\u2019s old address book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was in a box after she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course it was.<\/p>\n<p>Everything seemed to lead back there.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn said, \u201cGerald might already be looking for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stopped pacing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knows you\u2019ve found the envelopes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That possibility settled over us.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald had spent years keeping separate pieces of information in separate places. Tonight, because his plan had failed, all of us were speaking openly for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>His greatest risk was not the police.<\/p>\n<p>It was comparison.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stranger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Dad gave him the side-door code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Dad didn\u2019t hire him recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Martin has worked for him before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn spoke sharply through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the man\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a silence so complete that I knew before she answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard Gerald say it once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe week Eleanor died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood too quickly and had to catch herself on the rail.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel steadied her.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at the house. Gerald was angry. He was on the phone with someone, and I heard him say, \u2018Voss already handled it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold from my scalp to my fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you think he meant?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s voice became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I think you need to ask Martin what else he handled for Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hospital door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A police detective entered.<\/p>\n<p>He introduced himself as Detective Aaron Pike and asked whether Gabriel Lawson was present.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>Pike glanced between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve just come from speaking with Martin Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n<p>The detective\u2019s expression gave nothing away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said tonight wasn\u2019t the first job your father paid him to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel gripped Gabriel\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>Pike continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe claims Gerald Lawson hired him six years ago to follow Eleanor Lawson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike looked directly at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Voss, your mother had found something Gerald believed could destroy the family company.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29387\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Martin Admitted He Followed Eleanor Before Her Death, and the Storage Unit Contained Evidence Gerald Thought Was Gone Forever<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gabriel did not speak for several seconds after Evelyn mentioned his mother.
