His expression told me he had seen my message and had spent the drive trying to decide whether it was a warning, an accusation, or another battle between his wife and his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I emerged from the study.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes found me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Relief crossed his face first.<\/p>\n<p>Then confusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was such a strange thing to say that under different circumstances I might have laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, Gerald appeared from the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped when he saw me.<\/p>\n<p>For one brief instant, neither man spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald recovered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife has been behaving strangely all night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel dropped his bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, you texted me not to believe what I saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat am I supposed to see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, Gerald stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called you because something has been wrong with her for weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>The ease of the lie was almost impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel frowned. \u201cYou told me there was a problem with the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I drove back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now there\u2019s this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald gestured toward me as though I were an unfortunate complication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him what he put in my drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel turned toward his father.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald gave a tired sigh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere we go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel appeared in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at his sister and immediately saw something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>She was gripping the wall for balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel opened her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald answered for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe drank something of Chloe\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel crossed the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said, \u201cDad brought Chloe mango juice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was something in it,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drank it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she drink?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald realized too late what he had said.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s voice became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means everyone is exhausted and turning a stupid misunderstanding into a catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the drink?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething to help Chloe sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my stomach twist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou drugged me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put something in my juice without telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to calm you down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you need something to calm you down?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost answered.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald beat me to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she\u2019s been unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The prepared narrative.<\/p>\n<p>I watched my husband\u2019s face carefully.<\/p>\n<p>He did not immediately defend me.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald saw the hesitation too.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped into it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been accusing me of watching her. She thinks the family is conspiring against her. Tonight she locked herself in the bedroom and frightened Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what happened,\u201d Rachel said.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could have played the recording.<\/p>\n<p>I could have shown him the powder.<\/p>\n<p>I could have opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I asked one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did your father need me asleep before you came home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel turned toward Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>His father\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard fragments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said I should be asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said everyone should be asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Gabriel couldn\u2019t see me awake before he saw the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s composure slipped.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then a crash came from upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>All four of us looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald moved first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is upstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is upstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another sound followed.<\/p>\n<p>A drawer shutting.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel released his father and headed for the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stepped in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment everything changed.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at the man blocking his way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to listen to me first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald did not.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel went around him.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel followed.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed close behind her because she was still unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald came after us.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we reached the second floor, Gabriel was several steps ahead.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped outside my bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>The door was open.<\/p>\n<p>The light was on.<\/p>\n<p>The bed looked occupied beneath the rumpled comforter.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second I understood exactly what Gerald had intended.<\/p>\n<p>If I had swallowed the full drink, I would have been unconscious somewhere in that room. The stranger could have arranged himself beside me. My clothing could have been moved. Photographs could have been taken. Gabriel, already summoned home by his father, would have walked in at precisely the right moment.<\/p>\n<p>And Gerald would have controlled the explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel pushed the door open.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel screamed.<\/p>\n<p>A man was crouched beside my bed.<\/p>\n<p>He held my blue nightgown in one hand.<\/p>\n<p>A small black phone was in the other.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger froze.<\/p>\n<p>So did Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gabriel crossed the room and seized him by the collar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s eyes darted across the room.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Straight toward Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Gabriel notice.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Something bitter entered his expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel slammed him against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel,\u201d Gerald snapped. \u201cCall the police. This man broke in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald shouted, \u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel slowly turned his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaid you for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said she\u2019d be unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel made a broken sound.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis man is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger began speaking faster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said I had to be in the room when you got home. That\u2019s it. I wasn\u2019t supposed to touch her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s grip tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you supposed to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake it look like we were together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My husband stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said there\u2019d be pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s face emptied of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said nobody would believe her if she claimed she\u2019d been drugged afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I had already understood most of the plan, hearing another person describe it made the danger suddenly physical. Gerald had not merely wanted to embarrass me. He had constructed evidence. He had chosen a witness. He had calculated Gabriel\u2019s arrival. He had counted on my confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel pulled the white envelope from the pocket of her sweatshirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The small packet of white powder fell onto the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Then the receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gerald\u2019s handwritten instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel released the stranger long enough to pick up the note.<\/p>\n<p>I watched his eyes move across the page.<\/p>\n<p>CHLOE \u2014 MIDNIGHT.<\/p>\n<p>Drink.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Find her.<\/p>\n<p>His hands began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to drug my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought a stranger into her bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called me home so I would find them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you\u2019d divorce her before she could explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said the family would handle everything afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel lowered herself against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald finally lost control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was destroying this house!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shout cracked through the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>I flinched despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince she came here, you\u2019ve questioned everything. You stopped listening. You stopped signing documents without arguing. You started asking about company money that has nothing to do with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stopped.<\/p>\n<p>It was only a fraction of a second.<\/p>\n<p>But we all saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel slowly raised her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d she whispered, \u201cwhat company money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That silence opened a second door beneath the first.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger took advantage of the distraction and moved toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel grabbed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not taking the fall for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already admitted you agreed to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know he\u2019d actually drug her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald said, \u201cHe\u2019s lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled my phone from my robe pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy recorder has been running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen him angry, contemptuous, impatient, amused.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen fear on him until that moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recorded you checking whether I was asleep,\u201d I said. \u201cI recorded your conversation downstairs. I recorded you telling Rachel she drank something that wasn\u2019t intended for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald took one step toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay away from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His father stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps the first time in Gabriel\u2019s life, Gerald gave an order and his son did not instinctively make room for it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel steadied herself against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found Dad\u2019s drawer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald said her name sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are envelopes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat envelopes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe\u2019s. Mine. Yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat photographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe inside the house. Outside. In the driveway. Upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel turned slowly toward his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been watching her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald struck the wall with his palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>His authority had vanished so quickly that the word sounded almost pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald lunged.<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed Gabriel\u2019s wrist and tried to wrench the phone away.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel screamed.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger broke free.<\/p>\n<p>He rushed toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped into his path.<\/p>\n<p>He tried to shove past me.<\/p>\n<p>My hand closed around the glass sitting on the nightstand\u2014the clean one Gerald believed I had emptied hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I threw the remaining mango juice into the stranger\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>He recoiled, swearing.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel tackled him.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald turned toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel, barely able to stand, dragged a laundry basket into his path.<\/p>\n<p>His shin struck it.<\/p>\n<p>He stumbled and dropped to one knee.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment no one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked down at her father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always taught us never to show weakness first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She did not lower her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sirens sounded faintly beyond the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel must have completed the call during the struggle.<\/p>\n<p>The sound grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald rose slowly.<\/p>\n<p>His composure returned in pieces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you\u2019re doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the envelope on the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>At the powder.<\/p>\n<p>At the stranger beside my bed.<\/p>\n<p>At the photographs Rachel had brought upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cBut I finally know what you were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first police lights flashed blue against the bedroom windows.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s gaze moved toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that night, there was nowhere left for him to arrange the scene.<\/p>\n<p>And when the officers entered the house twelve minutes later, the stranger Gerald had hired began talking before anyone even asked him his name.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29385\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Man Gerald Hired Gave Police a Name Nobody Expected, and Gabriel Found a Second Set of Instructions<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The front door opened before I could reach the foyer.
