My phone remained recording on the nightstand, its screen turned facedown. The bottle containing the original juice was hidden inside the zipped lining of my suitcase. I had no idea whether preserving it mattered, but instinct told me not to pour away the only physical evidence I possessed.

I tried calling Gabriel once.

The call went directly to voicemail.

I typed: Call me as soon as you see this. Something is wrong at the house.

Then I erased it.

If Gerald somehow had access to Gabriel’s phone, I would be announcing that I was awake.

Instead, I sent a simpler message.

What time will you be back?

The message showed as delivered.

No reply.

I lay still and listened.

The Lawson house was enormous, but at night its size worked against it. Every movement traveled. Pipes clicked behind the walls. Old wood contracted. Rain tapped against three floors of windows. When someone crossed the marble foyer downstairs, the sound climbed the staircase.

At 12:42, the front door opened.

I stopped breathing.

A man spoke.

Not Gabriel.

His words were too muffled to understand.

Gerald answered him.

Then I heard something that made every hair on my arms rise.

“She must be asleep by now.”

I reached blindly toward my phone and checked that the recorder was still running.

Another voice answered.

“Are you sure?”

Gerald said something too softly for me to catch.

Then, more clearly: “…before Gabriel gets here.”

My husband.

Whatever Gerald had arranged depended on Gabriel arriving afterward.

I slipped from the bed.

There was a connecting bathroom between my room and a small dressing room. Beyond the dressing room was another door leading to the hallway. Gerald knew about it, of course, but he probably assumed I would be unconscious.

I crossed the bathroom without turning on a light.

When I reached the secondary door, I heard movement from farther down the corridor.

A bedroom door opened.

Then Rachel called weakly, “Dad?”

Gerald answered immediately.

“What are you doing awake?”

“I feel weird.”

I froze.

Rachel.

Her words were slurred.

“Go back to bed,” Gerald said.

“I’m dizzy.”

Silence.

Then his voice sharpened.

“What did you drink?”

“The mango.”

Another silence followed, longer than the first.

“Which mango?”

“The glass upstairs.”

My stomach dropped.

I opened the door.

Rachel was leaning against the hallway wall twenty feet away. Gerald stood in front of her, gripping both shoulders. Even in the dim light, I could see the change in his face.

It was fear.

Not concern.

Fear.

“How much?” he demanded.

Rachel blinked slowly. “What?”

“How much did you drink?”

“I was thirsty.”

Gerald glanced toward my bedroom.

I pulled back before he saw me.

The explanation arrived with sickening clarity. After leaving me, Rachel must have returned to the room while I was listening at the other door. She had seen the glass I had deliberately left looking untouched enough to convince Gerald but safe enough, I thought, because I had transferred the original contents.

Except I had not completely emptied it.

Some of the mixture had remained.

Or Rachel had found the bottle.

My thoughts collided.

I heard Rachel stumble.

Gerald caught her.

“Listen to me,” he whispered. “You’re going to your room.”

“I feel sick.”

“You’re tired.”

“What did you put in it?”

His response came after a pause.

“Nothing.”

Rachel made a faint, frightened sound.

I pressed one hand over my mouth.

Gerald guided her down the hall. A door opened and shut.

I waited until his footsteps moved toward the staircase.

Then I ran to Rachel’s room.

She was sitting on the floor beside her bed.

Her face looked washed of color.
