Not the hesitant tap of a guest wondering whether I was asleep. Two measured knocks, followed by silence. I was sitting against the headboard with my laptop open when Gerald Lawson spoke from the hallway. “Chloe. Open the door.” My husband’s father never asked twice when he believed something belonged to him, and apparently that included other people’s attention after midnight.

Gabriel had driven back into the city that afternoon for an emergency involving one of the Lawson company’s accounts. He had promised to return before breakfast. I had wanted to go with him, but Gerald had insisted I remain at the family house because the roads were slick from hours of rain. Rachel, Gabriel’s younger sister, was staying too. What should have been an ordinary overnight visit had slowly acquired the uncomfortable feeling of being trapped somewhere I had once voluntarily entered.

I closed the laptop and crossed the room. Gerald stood outside wearing dark trousers and a white shirt with the sleeves buttoned neatly at his wrists. In his right hand was a tall glass filled with thick mango juice. The hallway lamp made the drink glow a muddy gold.

“You’re still awake,” he said.

“So are you.”

His smile appeared without changing anything around his eyes. “I thought you might want this.”

He held out the glass. Tiny beads of condensation slid toward his fingers. I almost laughed because the gesture was so unlike him. Gerald had never brought me so much as a cup of coffee during the three years I had been married to Gabriel. He employed people to carry things. He considered personal service a form of hierarchy, and he had always made it clear where I ranked in his.

“I’m fine, thanks.”

His arm remained extended.

“It’s mango,” he said. “Rachel made a pitcher earlier.”

That was plausible. Rachel loved mango anything. Still, something in Gerald’s posture bothered me. He wasn’t offering the drink. He was waiting for compliance.

“I already brushed my teeth.”

“Drink it anyway.”

I looked at him.

He gave a small chuckle. “Must everything become a disagreement with you?”

That was Gerald’s favorite maneuver. He could turn refusal into disrespect before you realized a trial had begun. I had watched him do it to Gabriel at Sunday dinners, to Rachel whenever she questioned him, to employees who spoke too carefully around him. He rarely shouted. He preferred making people feel unreasonable for resisting him.

I accepted the glass.

“Happy?”

“I will be when you drink it.”

The answer came too quickly.

Rain whispered against the windows at the far end of the hall. Somewhere downstairs, the grandfather clock began striking midnight. Gerald did not glance toward it. His attention stayed fixed on the glass in my hand.

I raised it toward my mouth.

That was when I noticed the bottom.

The juice was thick enough that I might have missed it if I had actually swallowed. Against the clear glass, just below the mango pulp, several pale streaks clung stubbornly to the inside. They were too white to be fruit fiber. One small patch had gathered where the base curved upward, like powder that had been stirred but had not completely dissolved.

My lips stopped less than an inch from the rim.

Gerald’s gaze sharpened.

“Something wrong?”

I tilted the glass slightly, pretending to inspect the juice for pulp. The pale residue slid only a little.

“No.”

“Then drink.”

A dozen explanations passed through my mind. A vitamin supplement. Medicine. Powder from some drink mix. Something perfectly harmless that Rachel had added to the pitcher.

But if it were harmless, why hadn’t Gerald mentioned it?

More importantly, why was he watching me swallow?

I took a tiny amount into my mouth without letting it reach my throat, turned away as if the juice had dripped down my chin, and covered my lips with the sleeve of my robe. Gerald sighed impatiently. When I lowered my hand, the liquid was in the fabric.

“There,” I said.

“That was barely anything.”

“I drank it.”

“Finish the glass.”

His voice had changed. Not much. Just enough.

My heartbeat became loud in my ears.

I gave him the kind of tired smile people use when they want an argument to end. “I’ll finish it while I work.”

For several seconds he did not move.

Then his shoulders relaxed.

“Don’t stay up much longer,” he said. “Gabriel will be back early.”

The mention of my husband felt deliberate.

“I know.”

Gerald turned away, then stopped.

“Chloe.”

“Yes?”

“The least I expect in my own house is respect.”

I held up the glass. “Goodnight, Gerald.”

He walked down the hall.

I closed the door without locking it immediately. I listened to his footsteps descend the staircase. Only when I heard the study door shut below did I turn the lock.

My hand was shaking.

I carried the juice to the bathroom and set it beneath the bright vanity light. The white residue became even clearer. I took a clean cotton swab from my makeup drawer, touched it carefully to the bottom of the glass, and watched a chalky film coat the tip.

I did not know what it was.

That frightened me more than if I had.

My first instinct was to call Gabriel. I picked up my phone, found his name, and stopped with my thumb over the screen. Gerald had spent years persuading Gabriel that I saw hostility where there was only “family concern.” If I called at midnight claiming his father had put something in my drink, what would happen? Gabriel would drive back furious. Gerald would deny everything. The glass might disappear. And I would once again become the woman who had disrupted the Lawson household.

I hated that I even had to calculate whether my husband would believe me.

A soft noise came from the hallway.

I switched off the bathroom light.

Someone moved past my door.

I waited.

Three seconds.

Five.

Then came Rachel’s voice.

“Chloe?”

I unlocked the door.

Rachel stood there barefoot in pajama pants and one of Gabriel’s old university sweatshirts. Her dark hair was twisted into a loose knot, and she looked annoyed rather than frightened.

“Why are you lurking?” I whispered.

“I’m not lurking. I’m looking for my charger.”

Her eyes went to the glass in my hand.

“Oh. You found the mango juice.”

“You made it?”

“Yeah. This afternoon.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you put anything else in it?”

Rachel frowned. “Mango, milk, ice. Why?”

“Nothing powdered?”

“No.”

She studied my face.

“What happened?”

Before I could answer, a floorboard creaked near the stairs.

Rachel glanced toward the sound.

I made a decision.

“Come inside.”

She stepped into the room, and I quietly shut the door.

I showed her the bottom of the glass.

Her expression changed.

“That wasn’t in the pitcher.”

“You’re sure?”

“I made it myself.”

We stared at each other.

Then Rachel whispered, “Dad brought this to you?”

I nodded.

For a moment, the woman who had spent most of her life defending Gerald looked genuinely lost.

“Maybe it’s something harmless.”

“Then why didn’t he tell me?”

She had no answer.

I poured most of the juice into an empty water bottle from my suitcase, screwed the cap tight, and wrapped it in a towel. Then I rinsed the glass only enough to make it appear empty, leaving the faintest trace at the bottom.

Rachel watched me.

“What are you doing?”

“Making him think I drank it.”

Her face went pale.

“That’s insane.”

“Which part?”

“You thinking Dad drugged you.”

“I didn’t say drugged.”

“You were thinking it.”

I met her eyes.

“So were you.”

She looked away.

Another sound came from downstairs.

This time it was Gerald’s voice, low and indistinct, as though he were speaking on the phone.

Rachel opened my door a crack.

“I’m going to listen.”

“No.”

But she had already slipped out.

I waited beside the doorway. A minute passed. Then two. I could hear nothing except the rain.

When Rachel returned, she looked unsettled.

“What?”

“He was talking to somebody.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did he say?”

She swallowed.

“Something about forty minutes.”

“That’s all?”

“And he said…” She rubbed her palms against her sweatshirt. “He said she should be asleep by then.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

Rachel immediately shook her head. “We don’t know he meant you.”

“Who else was he expecting to be asleep forty minutes after he made me drink something?”

She said nothing.

I put my phone on the nightstand and activated the voice recorder.

Rachel noticed.

“Chloe.”

“If there’s an innocent explanation, recording tonight won’t hurt anyone.”

“And if there isn’t?”

I looked at the locked door.

“Then I want Gerald’s own voice explaining what happens next.”

Rachel stood motionless for several seconds before whispering, “I need water.”

She left before I could stop her.

I checked the time.

12:17 a.m.

Gerald had said someone should be asleep in forty minutes.

I placed the rinsed glass on the nightstand where it would be visible from the doorway, switched off the main light, and sat on the edge of the bed in darkness.

At 12:31, footsteps stopped outside my room.

The handle moved once.

Whoever was standing there discovered the door was locked.

Then Gerald’s voice came through the wood, so quiet I almost missed it.

“Chloe?”

I did not answer.

The handle moved again.

A few seconds later he walked away.

I stared at the glowing numbers on my phone.

12:32.

Gerald Lawson had come back to check whether I was unconscious.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I Pretended to Be Unconscious While Gerald Checked My Bedroom Door and Someone Else Entered the House Downstairs

At eleven fifty-eight, someone knocked twice on my bedroom door.
