it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove to Dad\u2019s house that evening with agents.<\/p>\n<p>In the basement, behind a workbench, stood a scorched metal box I had seen a thousand times and never opened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad produced a key from an old coffee tin.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were insurance papers.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s passport.<\/p>\n<p>Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Advance-care notes.<\/p>\n<p>And a folder labeled MEDICAL \u2014 ORIGINALS.<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>The original directive sat inside.<\/p>\n<p>Dad primary.<\/p>\n<p>Me secondary.<\/p>\n<p>No amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a handwritten letter from Mom dated three weeks after the supposed amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur still speaks for me if I cannot. Claire after him.<\/p>\n<p>My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n<p>The date mattered.<\/p>\n<p>It was after the alleged change naming Victor.<\/p>\n<p>If Mom had actually replaced Dad, why would she later write the opposite?<\/p>\n<p>She would not.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom she had signed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Pendelton.<\/p>\n<p>No notary.<\/p>\n<p>No legal flourish.<\/p>\n<p>Just her handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat down on the basement steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never changed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in three years, my father knew the truth about the choice he thought my mother had made.<\/p>\n<p>But relief lasted only seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Thorne turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>A note in Mom\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Victor asked me to sign a new directive today. I refused. He said Arthur is too emotional.
