Login attempts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fake history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne looked at Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou prepared it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI prepared files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had the laptop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he planned to give it to police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter asked, \u201cHow would he connect a years-old device to current conduct?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy claiming Maya left it during a reconciliation visit and he&#39;d recently found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Absurd.<\/p>\n<p>But absurd things can become dangerous when backed by paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she approve?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreatened to tell Maya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was going to warn me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid threatened Connor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Always a child placed against another child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat threat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if Patricia interfered, he&#39;d turn over documents showing Connor knowingly handled stolen scholarship money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocuments that are probably real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom protected Connor.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>And the price was me.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks asked if Marianne knew where the laptop might be.<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid kept sensitive materials in an off-site unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only know the facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave the name.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks and Lee exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s Route 6 warehouse had not been Dad&#39;s only storage point.<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>Before Marianne left, I stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you were tracking me, did you ever see me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I look like a criminal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was childish.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that.<\/p>\n<p>But I wanted to hear her answer.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne looked at me for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word hurt more than expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou carried the same canvas backpack for three years.
