Grant Consulting.<\/p>\n<p>Regular monthly amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had been paying her too.<\/p>\n<p>Both companies.<\/p>\n<p>Both parents.<\/p>\n<p>One hidden employee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was she doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks scanned the transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>One payment description contained an internal project code.<\/p>\n<p>MAYA-R.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does R mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks searched the newly preserved Vance Residential records.<\/p>\n<p>A matching project folder existed.<\/p>\n<p>Restricted access.<\/p>\n<p>Created during my sophomore year.<\/p>\n<p>Updated repeatedly until three weeks before graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#39;t old history.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever MAYA-R meant, my parents had kept it active almost until commencement.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks requested the preserved folder.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, her tablet chimed.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the first document.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The heading read:<\/p>\n<p>MAYA VANCE \u2014 RETURN STRATEGY.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>Below it were sections tracking my rent, employment, tuition balance, scholarships, class enrollment, known friends, and financial pressure points.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe&#39;s name appeared.<\/p>\n<p>So did Professor Porter.<\/p>\n<p>They had been watching everyone around me.<\/p>\n<p>The document wasn&#39;t a financial record.<\/p>\n<p>It was a plan.<\/p>\n<p>A plan to make staying at university so difficult that returning home would feel like my only option.<\/p>\n<p>I scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>Missed scholarship disbursements.<\/p>\n<p>Credit problems.<\/p>\n<p>Mail interception.<\/p>\n<p>Calls to landlords.<\/p>\n<p>Anonymous complaints to employers.<\/p>\n<p>My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Things I had dismissed as bad luck were listed as actions.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom was the final phase.<\/p>\n<p>If graduation remains likely, initiate reconciliation contact and obtain comprehensive release before degree conferral.<\/p>\n<p>The paperwork Mom admitted they brought.<\/p>\n<p>Then one final note.<\/p>\n<p>Added three weeks before graduation.<\/p>\n<p>M.G.: If Maya refuses release, David wants contingency.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat contingency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>The next page was missing.<\/p>\n<p>Not deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Removed from the archived folder before preservation.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had known exactly which page mattered.<\/p>\n<p>But beneath the missing entry, another note remained.<\/p>\n<p>P.V.: Absolutely not. We scare her.
