Its manager, Elise Warren, agreed to meet investigators after Brooks explained that the property might contain historical evidence.

I wasn't allowed to participate in the first search.

That angered me until Professor Porter reminded me that contamination mattered more than satisfaction.

“You want usable evidence,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Then let professionals touch things first.”

So Chloe and I sat in my apartment-sized borrowed life and waited for people with gloves to search my grandmother's secrets.

Three hours later, Brooks called.

“Come to the clinic.”

That phrase had become terrifying.

When I arrived, she placed a photograph on the table.

A square opening had been cut into concrete beneath an old storage rack.

Inside the cavity was an empty metal container.

Nothing else.

I stared at the image.

“Dad got there first.”

“Likely.”

“The contractor found the compartment.”

“According to invoices, yes.”

“And Dad removed whatever was in it.”

“Possibly.”

I wanted to sweep everything off the table.

Instead, I folded my hands beneath it.

“Then why did we bother?”

Brooks slid a second photograph toward me.

“Because the container wasn't truly empty.”

Inside one corner lay a narrow plastic sleeve.

A microfilm strip.

I frowned.

“What is that?”

“Something people used before cloud storage.”

“I know what microfilm is.”

Brooks almost smiled.

“You looked offended.”

“I am offended.”

Professor Porter leaned closer.

“Can it be read?”

“Yes.”

They had already begun.

Grandma had hidden financial information on microfilm.

Not exactly subtle.

But durable.

Hard to alter.

And apparently easy to miss.

Later that afternoon, Brooks let me see printed enlargements.

The first pages contained account ledgers.

Dates.

Amounts.

Customer names.

Transfers.

Dad's company.

Richard's initials.

Mom's initials.

And unfamiliar names.

I scanned the columns.

Some amounts were small.

Others weren't.

One transaction caught my eye.

$38,400.

HOLLOWAY, GEORGE/LILLIAN.

There it was.

Daniel Mercer's story.

Money arrived.

Then moved.

Part to payroll.

Part to another client's materials.

Part to an account marked CONSULTING.

“Who owned that consulting account?”

Brooks didn't answer immediately.

“We're working on ones.

Another page contained family accounts.

Mine appeared years before I became an adult.

Savings accounts Dad claimed never existed.

Custodial funds.

Grandma's trust.

Then Connor.

I leaned closer.

His name appeared beside several transfers.

Some dated before he was twenty-one.

“Those can't all be his.”

“Why?”

“He would have been seventeen there.”

Brooks nodded.

“Exactly.”

Someone had used Connor too.

That did not erase what happened later.

But it changed the beginning.

The microfilm documented a progression.

At first, Dad used accounts connected to children because they were easy to control.

Then customer funds.

Then company shells.

Then loans.

The theft grew with his confidence.

But the strangest entries appeared near the end.

Large sums moved into something labeled H-12.

I pointed.

“What is H-12?”

“We don't know.”

“Could H mean Hale?”

“Possibly.”

“Or Holloway.”

“Possibly.”

I looked at the sequence.

H-12 received money repeatedly.

Then, three months before Grandma died, money began moving out.

Not to Dad.

Not to Mom.

To separate accounts.

Small amounts.

Regular intervals.

“Someone was draining it.”

Brooks nodded.

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

“Maybe.”

“Grandma?”

“Maybe.”

I looked at margin.

Grandma's.

Not printed.

Original marks must have been on the page before microfilming.

She had written:

D thinks R is stealing.
