Others suggest he tried to separate from the company abruptly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he steal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven&#39;t established that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad accuse him officially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo criminal complaint we have found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the email to Connor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll examine it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Grandma&#39;s phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe phone contained recoverable messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks chose her words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne conversation occurred shortly before your grandmother&#39;s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Dad mentioned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Grandma say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks looked toward Professor Porter, then back to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still authenticating the data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter spoke gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya, let her finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message appears to show your grandmother telling Richard that money originally meant for your education had been moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard warned her not to confront your father alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly what Grandma later wrote to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she listen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer scared me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next message from Richard asked whether she was safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no response from your grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks gave me the date.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before Grandma was admitted to the hospital for the final time.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Professor Porter.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma had died after a rapid decline that everyone described as natural complications from her existing heart condition.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself not to invent a new crime where none had been proven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you saying Dad hurt her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firmness helped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no evidence of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does the timing matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause two days after your grandmother stopped responding to Richard, someone accessed Box 417.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bank box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe historical access log identifies an authorized user.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would have been twenty-one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how old he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis signature appears on the access record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered his call.<\/p>\n<p>Dad took me to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>I thought he meant they only asked questions.<\/p>\n<p>He had lied again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was removed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Grandma still alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room tilted.<\/p>\n<p>Connor had entered Grandma&#39;s box while she was alive.<\/p>\n<p>Then later told me Dad had merely been trying to find out whether the box existed.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter immediately said, \u201cDo not call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened Connor&#39;s email from last year, the one he&#39;d forwarded through his attorney and Professor Porter had sent to me for confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s message was brief.<\/p>\n<p>Connor,<\/p>\n<p>If your father ever put your name on anything you did not personally sign, check your credit and get independent counsel. Do not ask him first. Do not ask Patricia first.
