Dinner too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>The bank manager verified documents, identities, signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Then he led us through a steel door.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of narrow boxes lined the walls.<\/p>\n<p>Box 417 was larger than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks inserted the bank&#39;s control key.<\/p>\n<p>Then she handed me Grandma&#39;s key.<\/p>\n<p>My hand shook.<\/p>\n<p>I slid it into the lock.<\/p>\n<p>It turned.<\/p>\n<p>The box came free.<\/p>\n<p>We carried it into a private room.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the metal lid.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to open it yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lifted it.<\/p>\n<p>No money.<\/p>\n<p>No jewelry.<\/p>\n<p>No stacks of incriminating contracts.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>A flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>And an old prepaid cell phone.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once from sheer disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma had a burner phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the photograph first.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Dad standing beside a pickup truck behind his business office.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood near the passenger door.<\/p>\n<p>Another man faced away from the camera.<\/p>\n<p>And Connor stood beside Dad.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked young.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe twenty.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Grandma had written a date.<\/p>\n<p>Two years before she died.<\/p>\n<p>Connor had still been in his first college then.<\/p>\n<p>Below the date:<\/p>\n<p>D. brought Connor to meeting with R. Said he needed to learn \u201chow money really works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach sank.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t prove Connor understood anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it proved he had been closer to the business than he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>My vision blurred instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Maya,<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, then either I was wrong about your father or I was right and failed to stop him.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter touched my shoulder once.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma&#39;s handwriting slanted more than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that Dad had borrowed heavily against the business, then hidden losses by shifting customer deposits. She believed Mom had helped manipulate records. She suspected forged authorizations but lacked proof.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the part that made me stop.<\/p>\n<p>Your brother is being brought into matters he does not understand. I do not know whether David intends to protect Connor or use him. Those may be the same thing in your father&#39;s mind.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Connor had always looked protected.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma had seen danger.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>She had tried to confront Dad.<\/p>\n<p>He accused her of trying to destroy the company.<\/p>\n<p>Mom begged her not to report anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then Grandma wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Patricia told me that if David went down, all of you would lose everything. I told her some things should be lost.<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded exactly like Grandma.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Porter waited while I steadied myself.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end, the letter changed.<\/p>\n<p>If they tell you that you are difficult, remember that difficult often means not easily controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Tears slipped down my face.<\/p>\n<p>I wiped them angrily.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks looked away, giving me privacy without leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Then the final paragraph:<\/p>\n<p>There are records on the drive. The phone contains messages David believed were gone. Give them to someone outside the family. Do not confront him alone. And Maya, if you ever discover that Connor helped him willingly, do not let pity make you dishonest. If you discover Connor was used, do not let anger make you cruel.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence hurt worse than the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma had known me.<\/p>\n<p>Even then.<\/p>\n<p>She knew I would want simple categories.<\/p>\n<p>Victim.<\/p>\n<p>Villain.<\/p>\n<p>Innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Guilty.<\/p>\n<p>She had left me no permission for simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks took custody of the flash drive and phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll preserve them before examining anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen will I know what&#39;s on them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we can legally and safely tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that answer.<\/p>\n<p>But I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is R.?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks pointed to the man whose back faced the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you identify him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the bank, I found Chloe waiting outside with two coffees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrible news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I handed her the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>She studied it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnor looks like a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was twenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s a kid with car insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then she read Grandma&#39;s note.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think he knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose aren&#39;t exactly the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We walked toward campus.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Connor.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe saw the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t answer without recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a one-party consent state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at you, learning crime-adjacent practicalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor sounded terrible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to talk to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have a criminal lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost hung up.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cDad used my name too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe opened things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccounts. A company card.
