My parents told me she&#39;d left almost nothing after medical expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shouted, \u201cThat&#39;s private!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wind lifted the corner of the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told that if I insisted on attending university instead of staying home and working, I would receive no help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother tried another approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was an adult. Patricia said tuition was expensive, so I sent extra money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The folder suddenly felt heavier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat checks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked from me to Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery month for almost a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had known about two checks.<\/p>\n<p>The legal clinic had uncovered copies among old account records.<\/p>\n<p>I had not known there were monthly payments.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah reached into her handbag with shaking hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept records because of my taxes. I thought\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were receiving them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had become strangely calm.<\/p>\n<p>That was the expression she used when deciding which lie had the best chance of surviving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour aunt is confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered her voice. \u201cWe can discuss this privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s answer came so quickly that several people nearby murmured.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the copies I already had.<\/p>\n<p>Two checks.<\/p>\n<p>Both endorsed and deposited.<\/p>\n<p>Neither signature was mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Aunt Sarah sent monthly checks,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cwhere did the others go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>It was barely a movement.<\/p>\n<p>One foot.<\/p>\n<p>Half a step.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>So did Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>She had come to stand near the side of the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze shifted immediately toward him.<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the two checks investigators found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held them up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were made out to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognize those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were deposited into an account I didn&#39;t control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad started shouting again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ungrateful little liar!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer told him to stop resisting.<\/p>\n<p>I continued before he could reclaim the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, I was working nights because I couldn&#39;t afford groceries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice almost failed there.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I wanted sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>Because I remembered one particular February.<\/p>\n<p>Snow had turned gray along the sidewalks. My checking account contained eleven dollars and fourteen cents. I needed printing credit for a statistics assignment, so I bought crackers instead of dinner.<\/p>\n<p>That same week, Connor posted photographs from a ski trip.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t thought about the connection then.<\/p>\n<p>Now I looked at his suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know Aunt Sarah was sending money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t even let me finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you&#39;re implying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m asking a question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t take your stupid checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Sarah&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>The second section contained the credit records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis stopped being about missing checks when I discovered debt under my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor swore softly.<\/p>\n<p>Dad shouted over me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s obsessed with money!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring my first semester, credit accounts were opened using my Social Security information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya, you&#39;re confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had money problems. You probably applied for things you don&#39;t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember being nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were under tremendous stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the applications listed your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced her.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recovery contact on one account was an email address belonging to Connor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every head near him turned.<\/p>\n<p>Connor&#39;s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s bullshit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators have the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never opened anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t say you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He realized his mistake.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t a father&#39;s concerned glance.<\/p>\n<p>It was a warning.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than Connor&#39;s denial.<\/p>\n<p>There were layers here I still didn&#39;t fully understand.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent months assuming my parents were protecting Connor because he was their favorite.<\/p>\n<p>What if Connor wasn&#39;t merely being protected?<\/p>\n<p>What if he had participated?<\/p>\n<p>I lifted another document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis account was used for purchases in the town where Connor was living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor took another step backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of people live there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop acting like that proves anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, relief appeared on his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s why I didn&#39;t rely on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>I removed a printed email.<\/p>\n<p>The legal clinic had helped obtain it after the financial institution responded to a formal dispute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account sent confirmation messages to your address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>A silent chain of command.<\/p>\n<p>My father jerked against the officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know what you&#39;re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have to explain myself to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You can explain it to investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s voice became soft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>She had not called me sweetheart in years.<\/p>\n<p>Not when we were alone.<\/p>\n<p>Only when witnesses were present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve always been sensitive,\u201d she said. \u201cYou&#39;ve taken ordinary family decisions and turned them into attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cI slept in the library twice because my electricity was shut off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression didn&#39;t change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Sarah looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called home,\u201d I continued. \u201cYou told me losing electricity might teach me humility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound moved through the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Mom finally looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to teach you responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith money that belonged to me sitting in accounts I couldn&#39;t access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe paid for plenty of things for you growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The accounting system of my childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Food became debt.<\/p>\n<p>Shelter became debt.<\/p>\n<p>Shoes became debt.<\/p>\n<p>Love, when available, accrued interest.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, I thought I was weak because I struggled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice sounded steadier than I felt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought everyone else knew how to be an adult and I somehow didn&#39;t. Then I learned that someone had been creating debt in my name while money intended for me was disappearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped shouting.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He was staring past me toward the far entrance of the quad.<\/p>\n<p>Two uniformed city police officers had appeared beside campus security.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s head turned.<\/p>\n<p>Connor saw them too.<\/p>\n<p>His hand went into his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Dad shouted, \u201cConnor!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor froze.<\/p>\n<p>It was not the way a father called to his son.<\/p>\n<p>It was the way a man warned an accomplice not to run.<\/p>\n<p>The officers started walking toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Sarah came closer to the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were twelve checks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The number struck harder than Dad&#39;s palm had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had records for two.<\/p>\n<p>Ten were still missing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah added something that changed the entire shape of the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I didn&#39;t send them to your parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mailed them directly to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother whispered her name.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo your university address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved across my skin.<\/p>\n<p>I had never received them.<\/p>\n<p>Not one.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had intercepted mail after I left home.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knew where I lived.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knew my student mailbox information.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Connor.<\/p>\n<p>His expression answered before his mouth could.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29170\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Brother Denied Touching My Money Until an Old Email Revealed Who Had Been Watching Me Since Freshman Year<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My mother&#39;s face lost its color before I showed the first document.
