protected the property.

The program already operated.

The board already governed much of its work.

But these documents completed the transition that would allow My Own House to continue without depending on my daily involvement.

I would remain here.

I would retain my legal residence rights.

I would continue participating in programs when I chose.

But operational authority would belong to the organization.

Not me.

Not Ellen.

Not any single person.

That was the point.

I hated looked at the signature line.

Constance Miller.

My name.

The same name Robert had copied.

The same name that appeared on forged checks and a deed I had never authorized.

For months after the case, signing anything made me angry.

Then cautious.

Then tired.

Now a signature meant something else.

Consent.

Real consent required the ability to refuse.

Sarah had explained every provision.

I had independent advice.

No urgency.

No preserving something meant controlling it.

Money.

House.

Family.

Memory.

Perhaps Robert had believed the same thing in a corrupted form.

If he controlled the property, he controlled the future.

If Ellen controlled my accounts, she controlled uncertainty.

If I controlled My Own House forever, what exactly was I staircase.

Women had slept upstairs because this house existed.

Attorneys had sat at this table.

People had changed passwords here.

Cried here.

Called children here.

Refused children here.

Gone home.

Started over.

The house did not need me in every room to remain useful.

That was the whole
