chair and cried so hard I thought she might faint.

I put a glass of water beside her.

She pushed it away.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re dripping on my table.”

She laughed and cried harder.

Then she said, “I kept thinking maybe I was wrong.”

I knew.

“He told me so many times.”

I knew that too.

“I started checking the stove.”

My stomach tightened.

“Counting pills?”

She looked at me.

“How did you know?”

I sat down.

For the first time, I told Dorothy a little of my story.

Not everything.

Enough.

Her expression changed as I spoke.

When I finished, she said, “Your daughter was part of it?”

“Yes.”

“And she’s helping pay my lawyer?”

“Yes.”

I had not intended to reveal that.

But Dorothy was no longer just a resident.

She deserved agency over who funded her case.

She sat very still.

“Does she know about me?”

“Only what you permitted.”

“Why is she doing it?”

“You’d have to ask her.”

“Can I?”

That surprised me.

“You want to?”

“Yes.”

I called Ellen.

I explained.

She was silent for a long time.

“If Dorothy wants.”

“She does.”

“Okay.”

The meeting happened at Marisol’s office.

Neutral ground.

I attended only because both women asked.

Dorothy arrived first.

Ellen entered five minutes later.

When they saw each other, neither spoke.

Ellen looked frightened.

Dorothy looked furious.

That was fair.

Finally Dorothy said, “You did to your mother what my son did to me.”

Ellen’s face went white.

“Yes.”

No explanation.

Dorothy studied her.

“Why are you paying for my lawyer?”

Ellen swallowed.

“Because I can pay some.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Ellen looked toward me.

I did not help.

She turned back.

“Because when my mother needed someone to protect her choices, I helped take them away.”

Dorothy remained expressionless.

“And you think helping me fixes that?”

“No.”

Good.

“What does it fix?”

“Nothing.”

Better.

Dorothy’s jaw shifted.

“Then why?”

Ellen’s eyes filled.

“Because you still need help whether I deserve to feel better or not.”

The room became quiet.

Dorothy looked at me.

Then back at Ellen.

“You’re paying five hundred a month?”

“Yes.”

“You rich?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Ellen almost smiled.

Dorothy did not.

“I’m paying you back.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I wasn’t asking.”

I nearly laughed.

Ellen glanced at me.

I raised my eyebrows.

She understood immediately.

“Okay.”

Dorothy nodded.

“Good.”

Something passed between them.

Not forgiveness.

Not friendship.

Recognition, perhaps.

Two women connected by opposite sides of the same kind of harm.

Before leaving, Dorothy stopped Ellen.

“One question.”

“Yes?”

“When your mother said no, why wasn’t that enough?”

Ellen looked at me.

The room seemed to narrow.

Then she answered.

“Because I had spent years believing her love meant she would eventually give me what I wanted.”

Dorothy nodded.

“And now?”

“Now no means no.”

Dorothy opened the door.

“Learn faster.”

Then she left.

Ellen stood very still.

I walked beside her toward the elevator.

“That went well.”

She stared at me.

“You have a strange definition of well.”

“I’m seventy-six.”

“Seventy-seven next month.”

I stopped.

She smiled.

I laughed.

The elevator doors opened.

For one second, I saw the girl who used to correct my grocery lists.

Then the woman.

Then both.

Ellen stepped inside.

“Thursday?”

“Yes.”

“After six.”

“Yes.”

The doors closed.

On the drive home, I realized repair did not look like erasing damage.

It looked like building different habits beside the scar.

Slowly.

Repeatedly.

Without demanding that the scar disappear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Dorothy’s Son Arrived at My Door Demanding His Mother Back, and I Saw
