narrowly.

Ellen looked at Robert.

His face changed.

For the first time all day, the mask slipped.

I saw hope.

Tiny.

Automatic.

He believed love might still serve him.

Ellen saw it too.

“I don’t know.”

Robert’s face tightened.

She continued.

“I loved who I thought he was.”

The lawyer asked, “That wasn’t my question.”

Ellen looked straight at Robert.

“No.”

A pause.

“I don’t love what he chose to become.”

The courtroom remained silent.

Robert looked away first.

Cross-examination ended.

Ellen stepped down.

She did not come toward me.

She returned to the hallway alone.

During recess, I found her sitting on a bench.

I stood several feet away.

“You did well.”

She looked up.

“I told the truth.”

“Yes.”

Her mouth trembled.

“Same thing you said.”

“I remember.”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then Ellen asked, “Do you hate me?”

The question arrived without warning.

“No.”

Her face collapsed.

“I almost wish you did.”

“Why?”

“Because then losing you would make sense.”

I sat beside her.

Not touching.

Not yet.

“You haven’t lost me completely.”

She stared at me.

My own words surprised me.

“That doesn’t mean things go back.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t mean you get access.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t mean trust returns because you testified.”

“I know.”

I looked at my hands.

“But I’m still sitting here.”

Ellen began crying quietly.

“So are you.”

She nodded.

For several minutes, that was enough.

Then the courtroom officer opened the door.

“Mrs. Calder?”

Ellen stood.

“What?”

“The defense has decided to call Mr. Calder.”

She looked at me.

“Robert is testifying?”

The officer nodded.

My stomach tightened.

After years of speaking through paperwork, pressure, and other people, Robert was finally going to explain himself under oath.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Robert Took the Stand Certain He Could Explain Everything, Until His Own Words
