Evidence later showed Robert moved them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>By the end I was exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourt is barbaric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can feel that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would anyone voluntarily become a lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah handed me a new document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefense witness list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I scanned names.<\/p>\n<p>Most meant nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then one stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>A neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Patricia Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>She had lived two houses away for twenty-two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Patty have to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what she\u2019ll say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah nearly grabbed the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot contact a listed witness about testimony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>Patty had seen me daily for years.<\/p>\n<p>We exchanged mail during vacations.<\/p>\n<p>She knew when I was sick.<\/p>\n<p>Why would Robert call her?<\/p>\n<p>The answer arrived through pretrial disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>Patty had given a statement saying she observed me appear confused several times.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat times?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah read.<\/p>\n<p>Once, I asked what day garbage collection occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Once, I locked myself out.<\/p>\n<p>Once, I repeated a conversation.<\/p>\n<p>All real.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>But Robert\u2019s defense intended to use them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she lying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Truth can be weaponized more effectively than fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the final paragraph of Patty\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>She recalled Robert often helping me because I seemed increasingly dependent.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was manufacturing the dependence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she saw the help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill she believe me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat can the evidence establish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I was beginning to appreciate its indifference.<\/p>\n<p>The day before jury selection, a new report arrived from the forensic team.<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s notebook included one entry about Patty.<\/p>\n<p>P.L. notices everything.
