heard.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Everyone keeps thinking I knew.”

“I didn’t.”

She was silent.

“He was going to leave me.”

“So it appears.”

“After the house.”

“Yes.”

A long pause.

“I did all that to you for a marriage that didn’t exist.”

I chose my words carefully.

“You did it because of choices you made.”

“I know.”

“He lied to you.”

“I know.”

“Both can be true.”

She began crying.

“I keep trying to find one truth that makes the others easier.”

“There may not be one.”

“I hate that.”

“So do I.”

She laughed weakly.

“Are you allowed to say that?”

“I’m your mother, not your therapist.”

That produced a small sound that might have been a real laugh.

It vanished quickly.

“Melissa is testifying too.”

“So I heard.”

“Robert’s lawyer says I’m doing this out of revenge because of the affair.”

“What do you think?”

“I started cooperating before I knew.”

“Yes.”

“That should matter.”

“It does.”

She was quiet.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think he ever loved me?”

There it was.

A question no court could answer.

I refused to invent certainty.

“I think love that requires you to become smaller is not enough.”

She cried silently.

I continued.

“I think he may have loved you in whatever way he was capable of.”

“That sounds terrible.”

“It probably is.”

“But?”

“But what he felt does not change what he did.”

Silence.

“I loved him.”

“I know.”

“I hate that.”

“Don’t.”

She breathed unevenly.

“Why not?”

“Because your love is not the crime.”

I paused.

“What you did with it is what you have to answer for.”

She was quiet for a long time.

“That’s worse.”

“I know.”

A week later, the prosecutor informed Sarah that plea discussions had ended.

Robert would not accept an agreement reflecting the scope of conduct the government intended to prove.

The case would proceed.

I was almost relieved.

No language negotiated in a conference room could reduce what happened to a vague family dispute.

Evidence would be presented.

Witnesses would speak.

Robert would have the right to challenge them.

And I would have the right to answer.

The trial date was set.

When Sarah told me, I looked at the calendar.

My hands did not shake.

“Will I testify?”

“Yes.”

“Ellen?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Melissa?”

“Likely.”

“Reeves?”

“That depends on his own legal situation.”

I nodded.

“And Robert?”

“That will be his choice.”

I stared at the date.

The man who had spent years trying to make my voice legally irrelevant would now have to sit in a courtroom while people listened to me.

I felt no victory.

Only responsibility.

“Then I want to prepare.”

Sarah nodded.

“We will.”

As she gathered her papers, I asked one final question.

“Did Robert respond when the plea talks failed?”

“Through counsel.”

“What did he say?”

Sarah hesitated.

“He said Ellen was making a mistake.”

I almost smiled.

Of course.

Even now.

Even facing trial.

Robert still believed the problem was that someone else had chosen wrong.

<a
