He explained that specialists might examine them with my permission.<\/p>\n<p>I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he asked a question that seemed unrelated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Robert ever ask you to invest in his company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the oven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he couldn\u2019t explain what the company actually did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luis smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a good reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert described himself as a consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I asked what kind, his answers became longer and less clear.<\/p>\n<p>Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Business development.<\/p>\n<p>Acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Operations.<\/p>\n<p>Words that sounded important while meaning nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>Once, after Sunday dinner, he offered me an investment opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Guaranteed return, he said.<\/p>\n<p>I refused.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen sulked for two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten that.<\/p>\n<p>Now I remembered every detail.<\/p>\n<p>Robert leaning back in his chair.<\/p>\n<p>His expression when I said no.<\/p>\n<p>Not disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Offense.<\/p>\n<p>As if I had refused to give him something already his.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after you declined?\u201d Luis asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something had happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEllen started helping with my finances more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow soon after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried reconstructing the year.<\/p>\n<p>That was when she insisted on online banking.<\/p>\n<p>That was when she asked for copies of my insurance documents.<\/p>\n<p>That was when Robert offered to organize my tax files.<\/p>\n<p>The pieces aligned with terrible neatness.<\/p>\n<p>Not proof.<\/p>\n<p>A pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Luis asked whether anyone besides Ellen and Robert had access to my house.<\/p>\n<p>Cleaning service.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbor with emergency key.<\/p>\n<p>My nephew during visits.<\/p>\n<p>But none had their combination of access, knowledge, and financial connection.<\/p>\n<p>After they left, I remained at the kitchen table surrounded by copies of my own stolen money.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-eight thousand seven hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent my life measuring money by work.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-eight thousand dollars was not a number.<\/p>\n<p>It was mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of them.<\/p>\n<p>Three-thirty alarms.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-pound flour sacks.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in kitchens so hot my hair stuck to my neck.<\/p>\n<p>Missing television shows because another restaurant needed twelve pies before sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>Money had weight to me.<\/p>\n<p>Robert saw only availability.<\/p>\n<p>At two that afternoon, someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody was expected.<\/p>\n<p>A second knock came.<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the front window.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen.<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She stood on the porch holding nothing.<\/p>\n<p>No purse.<\/p>\n<p>No folder.<\/p>\n<p>No umbrella though rain threatened.<\/p>\n<p>My first emotion was anger.<\/p>\n<p>The second was fear.<\/p>\n<p>The third was shame that fear still came before love.<\/p>\n<p>I did not open the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEllen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not supposed to come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stepped closer to the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to tell you something before Robert finds out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the curtain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The file-cabinet key.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the prosecutor told you not to go through his office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut somebody already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got back to the house, the cabinet was open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall your lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there was one paper on Robert\u2019s desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left it where I would see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat paper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The quiet in my house became unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of list?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen stepped toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour medications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>She continued quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were dates. Doctor names.
