mountains.

Thomas’s property lay farther north, accessible by an old logging road that county maps barely acknowledged.

Dean remembered it from childhood.

Robert and Thomas had worked there one summer.

A hunting lodge stood on the land then.

After the brothers separated, ownership moved through several companies.

Eventually the property appeared abandoned.

Thomas still controlled it indirectly.

Federal agents arrived before us.

Morris did not want Sophie or me anywhere near an unsecured property linked to Thomas.

For once, I listened.

We waited at the Pine Creek sheriff’s office.

Three hours.

No call.

Four.

Then Morris entered.

Her still reconstructing it.”

I wanted to go immediately.

Morris made us wait until the property was processed enough for safe entry.

By afternoon, she drove us herself.

The cabin stood among pines at the edge of a ravine.

Small.

Weathered.

One window boarded.

Chimney leaning slightly.

Inside were two rooms.

Old stove.

Table.

Bunks.

Evidence markers covered the floor.

On the wall beside the stove were names.

DANIEL.

ETHAN.

NOAH.

CALEB.

No initials.

No codes.

Their full names.

As though they had finally reached somewhere they fifth?”

“We don’t know.”

There were also maps.

Many maps.

Road maps.

Topographic maps.

Hand-drawn diagrams.

Daniel had been planning.

Of course he had.

One wall showed Thomas’s known properties.

Addresses.

Names.

Arrows.

Claire.

Shell companies.

Old associates.

Daniel and the boys had turned survival into investigation.

“They were hunting him,” Sophie whispered.

“Or building a way out,” Morris said.

Both might be true.

A notebook found beneath a floorboard belonged to Noah.

His handwriting had matured.

The boy who once left a hurried note near the red bridge now wrote careful observations.

Tom moves every 4–6 days when nervous.

Claire still contacts him but they’re fighting.

Dad says don’t assume Claire is helping just because she helped C once.

C meant Caleb.

Another entry:

E thinks we should go straight to federal office. Dad says we need proof Tom can’t explain away.

Ethan had become the aggressive one.

Understandably.

He had spent years free enough to know how close safety could be.

Daniel remained cautious.

Another page:

C still wakes up when cars stop outside.

My throat tightened.

Next:

Dad’s ribs bad again.

Next:

E and Dad arguing. E says secrets caused this. Dad didn’t answer.

I closed the notebook.

That line hurt because Ethan was right.

Daniel knew he was right.

Secrecy had begun with Robert.

Passed to Daniel and Dean.

Protected evidence.

Destroyed trust.

Given Thomas darkness to work inside.

Sophie opened another evidence photograph.

A message written on the cabin wall:

NO MORE HIDING AFTER THIS.

Daniel’s handwriting.

“What was ‘this’?”

The maps answered.

They were planning to collect evidence from Thomas’s nearby mountain property.

Not the cabin.

A second site.

An old mine office farther up the ridge.

Daniel believed Thomas kept records there.

More importantly, Noah’s notebook suggested Claire had arranged a meeting.

Claire claimed she wanted out.

She said Thomas had become unstable.

She offered financial records proving kidnappings, bribes, and shell-company transfers.

“Why would they trust Claire?”

“They didn’t,” Morris said.

Noah’s next entry made that clear.

E says trap.

C says Claire got him to Marian.

Dad says both can be true.

That sounded exactly like Daniel.

People could help once and betray later.

People could be afraid and dangerous simultaneously.

Nothing had become simple.

The planned meeting date was sixteen months ago.

At the mine office.

Daniel intended to go with Ethan.

Noah and Caleb would remain at the cabin.

That plan changed.

A later note:

C refuses to stay.

Then:

All go. He is right.

My chest tightened.

Noah wants to make sure Tom can never follow us. He is also right.

Caleb says everybody should stop arguing and get in the car. He may be the smartest Mercer left.

Sophie laughed through tears.

The letter continued.

I have spent years trying to protect you by keeping danger away from you. I understand now that I also kept truth away from you. I can’t undo that.

Then:

If something interrupts us today, the boys know the new plan. Nobody stays to rescue anybody. We split, we move, and we meet at the last place Tom would ever choose.

No location.

Of course.

Another code.

“What was the last place Thomas would choose?”

Nobody knew.

The mine-office evidence gave us the beginning of what happened.

Claire arrived first.

Her vehicle registration appeared in an old automated toll record nearby.

Thomas arrived later.

Unexpectedly.

At least two additional vehicles followed.

The meeting was a trap.

Or Thomas discovered it.

Gunfire occurred.

But no bodies remained.

A hidden trail sign on the back wall pointed toward the ravine.

Investigators followed it.

At the bottom they found a torn piece of Ethan’s backpack strap.

Farther on, Noah’s notebook cover.

Then one of Caleb’s shoelaces tied around a branch.

All three boys had moved through the ravine.

Daniel too?

Blood on a rock matched a male Mercer family line, but rapid testing could not yet distinguish Daniel from his sons.

They reached a forest road.

There the trail ended.

Searchers found evidence of an old vehicle fire in a ditch.

Records showed a burned SUV had been recovered the day after the gunfight.

Vehicle registered under a Thomas shell company.

No occupants.

Inside the recovered evidence inventory was an object police at the time considered meaningless.

A gray stone.

Small enough for a child’s pocket.

Sophie stopped breathing.

“Caleb’s.”

Her rock.

The one Caleb had carried for more than five years.

Found inside Thomas’s burned SUV.

“What does that mean?”

Morris could not answer.

Maybe Caleb had been inside.

Maybe he dropped it deliberately.

Maybe the boys stole Thomas’s vehicle.

The original fire investigation included one witness.

A forestry worker reported seeing four people walking away from the burning SUV before dawn.

Four.

One adult.

Three younger men.

My heart hammered.

Daniel and our sons.

Together.

Again.

The worker offered them help.

They refused.

He remembered the adult saying someone would come for them.

“Who?”

The worker did not know.

But he remembered one other thing.

The oldest boy asked which direction led toward Interstate 8.

That highway ran south.

Toward home.

Yet the four figures reportedly walked north.

Away from it.

“Why?” Sophie asked.

I looked at Daniel’s letter.

The last place Tom would ever choose.

Then I understood.

Not a safe house.

Not another family property.

Not a hidden cabin.

Thomas spent decades avoiding one place above all others.

Police.

More specifically, federal law enforcement.

I told Morris.

She searched the regional map.

North of the burned SUV, twenty-six miles away, stood a federal correctional complex.

But civilians could not simply walk inside.

Beside it, however, was something else.

A federal law-enforcement training facility.

Public administrative entrance.

Security everywhere.

Cameras.

Armed officers.

The last place Thomas would voluntarily approach.

Morris immediately contacted the facility.

Six-year-old visitor logs were archived.

So were security incidents.

One entry appeared the morning after the mine confrontation.

Four unidentified males approached the outer gate on foot.

One adult.

Three younger.

They requested federal protection.

My entire body went cold.

“What happened?”

Morris kept reading.

The gate officer detained them temporarily while supervisors were contacted.

The adult gave his name.

Daniel Mercer.

The incident report flagged the name because Daniel and three sons were still listed as missing presumed dead.

Federal agents were summoned.

For the first time in more than five years, my husband had walked directly into legitimate federal custody with all three sons beside him.

Alive.

Safe.

Or they should have been.

But the report contained a final line.

Before the interviewing agents arrived, an emergency evacuation alarm sounded in an adjacent building.

During the confusion, the four Mercers were moved to a secure holding area.

When personnel returned eighteen minutes later, the room was empty.

No Daniel.

No Ethan.

No Noah.

No Caleb.

The exterior door had been opened using an authorized federal access card.

And according to the electronic log, that card belonged to an investigator who had retired three years earlier.

An investigator named Raymond Harlan.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25:
