14 – Inside the Quarry Tunnel We Found Three Children’s Names on the Wall and Evidence Someone Had Kept Them Alive for Days

The quarry had been abandoned long before my children were born.

Nature had reclaimed most of it.

Birch trees grew through cracked concrete.

Pools of rainwater filled excavated pits.

Rusting conveyor frames crossed the hillside like the skeleton of some enormous machine.

The maintenance tunnel ran beneath the eastern ridge.

According to old property maps, workers once used it to access pumps and electrical equipment.

The main entrance had been sealed after the quarry closed.

Or so county records claimed.

Dean showed Morris another entrance.

A narrow service opening hidden behind brush near the old hunting shelter.

He had explored it as a teenager with Daniel.

Thomas too.

Of course Thomas knew.

Everything came back to the same childhood geography.

Places that once belonged to brothers and cousins had become a map for abduction.

Police entered first.

Sophie and I waited outside with Dean.

Raymond remained in custody.

Thomas’s location was unknown.

Investigators had begun actively searching for him after Raymond’s latest statement, but Thomas had disappeared from his registered home before police arrived.

Again.

A man who spent his life escaping consequences apparently still knew how.

Dean stood beside me staring at the tunnel.

“If I’d known—”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

I did not have room for another confession of regret.

We had facts now.

I wanted more.

An hour passed.

Then another.

Teams carried evidence boxes from the tunnel.

Old tools.

Trash.

Animal bones.

Nothing.

Finally Morris emerged.

Her face told me something had changed.

“Come with me.”

Inside, the tunnel smelled of wet stone and rust.

Portable lights cast hard shadows along the walls.

Water dripped somewhere deeper underground.

Our footsteps echoed.

We passed a collapsed section reinforced with temporary supports.

Then entered a chamber that had once housed electrical equipment.

On one wall were scratches.

Not random.

Names.

ETHAN.

NOAH.

CALEB.

My knees buckled.

Sophie caught me.

The letters were uneven.

Carved into limestone with something sharp.

Under Ethan’s name was a line.

Then another.

Then another.

Tallies.

Days.

Or hours.

I touched nothing.

Just stared.

“They were here.”

Morris nodded.

“Yes.”

The room contained other signs.

Three flattened areas where blankets might have been laid.

Canned-food lids.

Plastic water bottles.

A child-sized sock.

A rusted spoon.

Someone had kept people inside.

Not briefly.

Long enough to eat.

Sleep.

Wait.

“How long?”

“We don’t know yet.”

A technician photographed the tally tightened.

Three weeks underground.

The thought was unbearable.

Morris cautioned us.

“The marks may not be days.”

But everybody looked at them the same way.

Along another wall, Noah had drawn something.

A house.

Six stick figures outside.

Then four inside.

Three smaller.

One tall.

My breath stopped.

Daniel with the boys.

Beneath it, someone had written:

MOM + GIRLS HOME.

Sophie turned away and cried.

I pressed my palm against my mouth.

My sons had thought about us in this dark place.

Not as abstractions.

Home.

Mom.

Girls.

Alive somewhere beyond stone.

Another message was carved lower.

DAD SAYS WE LEAVE WHEN LIGHT COMES TWICE.

“What does that mean?”

Morris studied it.

Maybe a schedule.

Maybe guards.

Maybe Daniel had discovered when someone entered the tunnel.

“He was planning another escape,” I said.

Nobody contradicted me.

In a side chamber, investigators found blood.

Old.

Protected from weather.

More than a trace.

Enough that everyone understood someone had been injured.

Samples went to the lab.

Near it lay a strip of brown fabric.

Daniel’s fishing jacket.

“He was here too.”

Sophie’s voice was them.

Why?

The ledger.

He still believed Daniel could lead him to it.

Daniel’s lies had bought time.

Maybe days.

Maybe weeks.

“What does Raymond say?”

Morris’s expression hardened.

“He claims he wasn’t here long.”

“How
