it.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Thomas wanted the evidence, why burn it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why take Dad and the boys here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not know.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Daniel had lied about where the archive was.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Thomas forced him to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the box had already been emptied by Robert years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Every answer created another question.<\/p>\n<p>Late in the afternoon, a detective called Morris toward the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>They spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then both looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that look now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris approached holding an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a tiny blue object.<\/p>\n<p>A plastic bead.<\/p>\n<p>I did not driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Noah\u2019s wrist was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Blue and black bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find the bead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My legs weakened.<\/p>\n<p>Not outside.<\/p>\n<p>Not somewhere it could have arrived accidentally.<\/p>\n<p>Inside.<\/p>\n<p>Under a gap beside the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>A place missed by cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>My son had been in that cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie started crying openly.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled her against me.<\/p>\n<p>For six years, I had believed Noah vanished on the water.<\/p>\n<p>Now part of something he wore had waited beneath the floorboards of a cabin miles away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere all four here?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can only establish Noah and probably Daniel right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe button.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Ethan and Caleb?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re searching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As evening approached, Morris ordered the property preserved overnight.<\/p>\n<p>I did not want to leave.<\/p>\n<p>She insisted.<\/p>\n<p>On the drive home, Sophie stared out the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey survived the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tightened my hands around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least long Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bead from his bracelet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean sat down hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Thomas know about the cabin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have mentioned that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed police knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop assuming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed with Dean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the brass key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was one inside the archive box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean rubbed his box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage unit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood and paced.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel had a key like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you remember it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dad gave each of us something before he died. Daniel got a brass key on a leather cord. I got Dad\u2019s watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel wore it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that key.<\/p>\n<p>Long before I understood what it might mean.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel kept it in his dresser drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Then one day it disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed it belonged to an old toolbox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Robert say when he gave it to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean\u2019s eyes narrowed as he searched his memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething like, \u2018If you ever need the truth, this opens it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>The key in the archive box might not belong to the box.<\/p>\n<p>It might open something else.<\/p>\n<p>I called Morris.<\/p>\n<p>She returned to the property the next morning with a locksmith consultant and additional investigators.<\/p>\n<p>They tested the key against everything found at the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Doors.<\/p>\n<p>Old cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>A rusted tool chest.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then one of the current owners mentioned an outbuilding that had been removed several years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>An old pump house.<\/p>\n<p>It had stood downhill from the well.<\/p>\n<p>Only the concrete foundation remained.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators searched it.<\/p>\n<p>A metal detector sounded near one corner.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath several inches of soil was a small steel plate.<\/p>\n<p>Four bolts.<\/p>\n<p>A recessed keyhole.<\/p>\n<p>The brass key fit.<\/p>\n<p>When the plate opened, it revealed a narrow waterproof tube embedded in concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was not the archive.<\/p>\n<p>It held a single sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope had been hidden before he disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Before the fishing trip.<\/p>\n<p>Before the boat.<\/p>\n<p>Before six years of grief.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had left something for me at his father\u2019s cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Morris opened it only after photographing everything.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were two sheets of paper.<\/p>\n<p>The first began:<\/p>\n<p>Andrea, if you are reading this, then something I hoped would never reach our family probably has.<\/p>\n<p>I could not continue.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie took my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Morris read silently first.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed halfway down the second page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel knew Thomas had found him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least several weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris handed me the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had written that Thomas wanted Robert\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n<p>He had refused.<\/p>\n<p>He believed Thomas was using Dean\u2019s financial trouble to get close to the family.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the sentence that changed the investigation again.<\/p>\n<p>I moved the archive before Dad died. Tom thinks it stayed here, but it didn\u2019t.
