Daniel was the one he trusted with the location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like Robert.<\/p>\n<p>It also sounded like Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>My husband had been the person people trusted with difficult things.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently even things he should have shared with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Thomas know Daniel had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain how you accidentally tell a criminal uncle where secret evidence is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was because of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course it was.<\/p>\n<p>Dean had been desperate for financing.<\/p>\n<p>Banks rejected him.<\/p>\n<p>His company was collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>Then someone contacted him claiming to represent private investors.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first I didn\u2019t recognize the name Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he recognized you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he tell you who he was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a few meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you kept doing business with him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase had become Dean\u2019s explanation for everything.<\/p>\n<p>I hated it more each time.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas introduced him to Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond arranged financing.<\/p>\n<p>The money kept Dean\u2019s company alive temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>Then the debts multiplied.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas began asking questions about Robert.<\/p>\n<p>About Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>About old family records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him Dad had given some things to Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s all I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas began contacting Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel refused to engage.<\/p>\n<p>Then, approximately a year before the fishing trip, Daniel\u2019s old phone disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>The phone sitting on my kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel told me he lost that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean looked at the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie and I spoke together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean said Thomas had admitted it to him months later.<\/p>\n<p>He had entered our garage during a family gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s phone was charging near the workbench.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas took it, hoping it contained messages or information about Robert\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Thomas wasn\u2019t at our family gatherings,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot as Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words made no sense.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dean explained.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had come once under another name.<\/p>\n<p>A business associate of Dean\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>A summer barbecue.<\/p>\n<p>Dean had brought two men from work.<\/p>\n<p>One older.<\/p>\n<p>Quiet.<\/p>\n<p>He stayed perhaps forty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I had barely spoken to him.<\/p>\n<p>The realization made my skin crawl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear my children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you knew who he was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly the chair tipped backward.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie caught it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought him into my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut later you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean stood too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop saying that as though shame is an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop using it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>I walked to the counter because I needed distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was the phone back in the boys\u2019 room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas returned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t find what he wanted. He told me later he slipped it into a box in the garage during another visit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother visit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came by when nobody was home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew where Daniel kept the spare garage key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt violated in a way I had not expected.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the phone had been inside our home because a man Daniel feared had secretly returned it.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at the device differently now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould he have installed something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTracking software. Something to read Dad\u2019s messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question hung there.<\/p>\n<p>I called Morris.<\/p>\n<p>Within an hour, a digital-forensics technician collected the phone.<\/p>\n<p>By morning, they found evidence that the device had been accessed and modified during the period Daniel believed it lost.<\/p>\n<p>An application had been installed.<\/p>\n<p>Primitive by current standards.<\/p>\n<p>Capable of forwarding location data and certain messages.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had not merely stolen Daniel\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>He had compromised it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould that still affect Dad\u2019s newer phone?\u201d Sophie asked.<\/p>\n<p>The technician explained that if Daniel restored data from the old device onto his replacement, certain account credentials and synchronized information might have remained accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Not indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>But possibly long enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Thomas could have known where Dad was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fishing trip might never have been private.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel could have been tracked.<\/p>\n<p>The gas station.<\/p>\n<p>The marina.<\/p>\n<p>The lake.<\/p>\n<p>Every location.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Dean\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel glancing repeatedly toward Raymond\u2019s Tahoe.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Daniel already suspected someone was following him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy take the boys onto the lake if he knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked the question aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Dean answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he didn\u2019t know how serious it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explanation hurt because it sounded human.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was careful.<\/p>\n<p>But careful people still misjudge danger.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when danger comes wearing a familiar face.<\/p>\n<p>Later that afternoon, Morris called with another discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators had searched Robert Mercer\u2019s probate records.<\/p>\n<p>Among ordinary property documents was a reference to a safe-deposit box closed shortly before his death.<\/p>\n<p>The bank no longer existed.<\/p>\n<p>Its records had been absorbed by another institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the box?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Daniel emptied it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis signature appears on the closure paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The archive.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re tracing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie and I spent the evening searching Daniel\u2019s old files.<\/p>\n<p>Tax folders.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance documents.<\/p>\n<p>Receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Near midnight, Sophie stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was holding a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Not from the phone.<\/p>\n<p>A printed picture from one of Daniel\u2019s old desk boxes.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Daniel and Robert standing beside a cabin.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the place.<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s old hunting property.<\/p>\n<p>It had been sold years before his death.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Daniel had written a date.<\/p>\n<p>Below it were four words.<\/p>\n<p>Dad says remember the well.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat well?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew exactly which one.<\/p>\n<p>There had been an abandoned stone well behind Robert\u2019s cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Covered with heavy boards.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel used to warn the children never to go near it when we visited.<\/p>\n<p>The property had been sold almost thirteen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I called Morris.<\/p>\n<p>Records showed the land still belonged to the same family that bought it from Robert.<\/p>\n<p>By sunrise, investigators were arranging permission to search.<\/p>\n<p>Dean stared at the photograph for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad used to say some things belong where nobody would ever think to look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned it over again.<\/p>\n<p>Remember the well.<\/p>\n<p>The archive might have been hidden there.<\/p>\n<p>But if Daniel knew that, Thomas might have learned it too.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, I wondered whether the fishing trip had been only one part of a larger plan.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Thomas had not forced Daniel and the boys off the boat to kill them.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had taken them somewhere because Daniel was the only person who could lead him to what Robert had hidden.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29036\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Beneath Robert\u2019s Abandoned Well We Found the Empty Archive Box, Along With Proof Daniel Had Reached the Cabin After Vanishing<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dean did not answer my calls for the rest of the day.
