I had slept perhaps two hours, most of it on the couch with Daniel\u2019s old phone on the table beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did prosecutors offer him?\u201d Sophie asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing yet,\u201d Morris said. \u201cThey agreed to hear what he has to say. boat and send it toward the opposite shore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deliberately crashed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond says he aimed it toward rocks, accelerated, and jumped into the smaller boat before impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the crushed hull.<\/p>\n<p>The broken windshield.<\/p>\n<p>The apparently inexplicable collision.<\/p>\n<p>Not weather.<\/p>\n<p>Not bad storage with other marine equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was absurd.<\/p>\n<p>It was also possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Caleb\u2019s whistle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond denies hiding it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenies knowing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scratches?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo someone else accessed that console before Raymond staged the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at Thomas\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Thomas take my family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris\u2019s expression told me before she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond says he doesn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie pushed back from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. That\u2019s where his story conveniently ends?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Thomas left the inlet with Daniel and the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Ray just watched?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Thomas told him to wait fifteen minutes before damaging the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe followed the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was afraid, so he helped erase four people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris did not disagree.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Dean.<\/p>\n<p>Morris saw the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mercer\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Into an uncle whose name had been erased from family history.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever Daniel had been protecting that Sunday morning had been important enough for Thomas
