appears likely.”

“What did it hit?”

“We don’t know.”

“When?”

“We don’t know.”

“Where were they before that?”

“We’re still establishing a timeline.”

Every answer ended with uncertainty.

I walked away before anger could become something worse.

Near the shoreline, volunteers were gathering.

Some carried binoculars.

Others wore boots and heavy coats.

A woman I had never met approached and touched my arm.

“We’ll find them.”

She meant it kindly.

I wanted to believe her so badly that I almost hated her for saying it.

By afternoon, news crews too.

Near dusk, Mark approached with another investigator.

They had reconstructed part of Daniel’s likely route.

He had launched Sunday morning.

Several witnesses remembered seeing him.

One marina employee recalled the boys.

“They were loud,” he said apologetically.

I almost laughed.

Of course they seemed unimportant.

Later it would matter.

At the time, I only asked, “Did they say where they were going?”

He shook his head.

Search teams continued into the night.

The second morning brought rain.

The third brought divers from another county.

By the fourth day, authorities had covered sections of shoreline I did not even know existed.

Friends organized food for volunteers.

Our church opened a room for relatives.

Dean arrived the first night and almost never left.

Daniel’s younger brother had always been close to our children.

He took the girls home when I refused to leave the command post.

He brought clean clothes.

He handled phone calls.

He sat beside me at three in the morning when nobody had anything new to say.

At first, I was grateful.

Later, I would remember how often Dean redirected certain questions.

On the fifth day, I asked Mark whether Daniel could have deliberately taken the boys somewhere.

The question disgusted me even as I asked it.

Mark did not react.

“We found no evidence suggesting that.”

“People keep saying four bodies disappearing is unusual.”

“It can happen in deep water.”

“But four?”

“The lake has strong currents in certain areas.”

“Daniel knew that.”

Mark nodded.

“Yes.”

I hated that nod.

Everyone kept using Daniel’s knowledge against him.

He knew the lake, therefore perhaps he had miscalculated.

He was cautious, therefore perhaps he had encountered something caution could not prevent.

But nobody could explain the contradiction that lodged inside me.

Daniel did not ignore storms.

Daniel did not forget safety gear.

Daniel did not take three boys into dangerous water without a plan.

After nearly two weeks, the search began to shrink.

Officials did not say stop.

They said transition.

That word felt crueler.

Resources were transitioning.

Daily operations were transitioning.

The investigation was transitioning from active rescue to recovery.

I understood the translation.

They no longer expected to find anyone alive.

Sophie stopped coming to the lake after that.

She stayed home with her sisters.

One evening, I found her sitting on the floor of the boys’ room.

Three beds.

Three desks.

A shelf filled with trophies, books, tangled charging cables, and things that had suddenly become relics.

She held Caleb’s pillow against her chest.

“You said they’d find them.”

I sat beside her.

“I know.”

“You said Dad knew what he was doing.”

“He did.”

“Then what happened?”

That was the question.

The only one.

“I don’t know.”

She wiped her face angrily.

“Everybody keeps saying accident.”

“I know.”

“Do you believe that?”

I looked around the room.

Ethan’s sweatshirt hung from the back of a chair.

Noah’s school notebook lay open on the desk.

Caleb had left one sneaker beside his bed and the other inexplicably near the closet.

Life interrupted.

Not completed.

“I believe something happened on that lake.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“No.”

She waited.

I whispered, “I don’t understand how.”

Months later, official paperwork used words like presumed drowned.

I signed documents with hands that did not feel like mine.

No bodies had been recovered.

No final location established.

No witness had seen the accident happen.

But eventually, institutions require conclusions even when families do not have them.

Daniel and our sons were declared dead.

Four names.

Four dates.

The same final date.

The dining table became impossible.

For weeks, the girls and I ate in the living room because I could not tolerate seeing the empty chairs.

Dean continued helping.

If a pipe broke, he came.

If one of the girls needed transportation, he came.

If I forgot an appointment, he reminded me.

People called him devoted.

They were not wrong.

But there was one subject he never allowed to breathe.

The lake.

Whenever I returned to my questions,
