Plastic. Lanyard attached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what the store sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo there should have been three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the additional vest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdult size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned several pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould both have washed away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark gave him a tired look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course they could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer should have reassured me.<\/p>\n<p>It did not.<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA damaged open boat can lose equipment fast. If they hit something, if the boat took water, if somebody fell out\u2014anything loose can disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the whistles weren\u2019t loose,\u201d Sophie said.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were meant to be worn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She leaned toward the inventory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf three children had whistles and only two were recovered, the missing one might have been on one of the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if the adult vest was missing too\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo maybe one boy and one adult were wearing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Dean turned away from the window.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody said what all three of us were thinking.<\/p>\n<p>A child wearing one of the whistles.<\/p>\n<p>An adult wearing the missing vest.<\/p>\n<p>Two pieces of safety equipment absent from a boat that supposedly carried one adult and three children.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWere all the other life jackets recovered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark flipped through the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many were missing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He counted again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne child-sized jacket was never conclusively recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the missing child whistle and missing child jacket could belong to the same boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the adult vest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s harder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Daniel already had his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark nodded.<\/p>\n<p>According to the reports, one adult jacket identified as Daniel\u2019s had been recovered caught in brush several hundred yards from the damaged boat.<\/p>\n<p>The newer adult vest from the store had never appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Dean lowered himself into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was never on that boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one challenged him.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded like he was trying to convince himself anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed the inventory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore we build a theory around missing gear, we need to remember what lake searches are like. Things disappear. Things travel. Items get found by civilians and never reported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why wasn\u2019t this checked?\u201d Sophie asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Why wasn\u2019t it checked against what Dad bought that morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we didn\u2019t know he bought anything that morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The simplicity of the answer hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Six years ago, investigators had reconstructed Daniel\u2019s movements imperfectly.<\/p>\n<p>The supply-store stop had either been missed or dismissed as routine.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew an employee remembered my sons.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew Daniel purchased an extra adult vest because he expected Dean.<\/p>\n<p>And nobody knew how deeply that detail would matter years later.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may be something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He disappeared into another room.<\/p>\n<p>When he returned, he carried a smaller folder and an old external hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe documented the boat before it was moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had seen some of those photographs during the original investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Not many.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I could barely look at them.<\/p>\n<p>The damaged hull had felt like a coffin without bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Mark connected the drive to his laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Folders appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Case numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of images.<\/p>\n<p>My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie noticed and placed hers over mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened the first photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s boat rested half on mud, half in shallow water near a rocky shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>One side was crushed inward.<\/p>\n<p>The windshield had splintered.<\/p>\n<p>A seat cushion was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Fishing line hung tangled from a rail.<\/p>\n<p>Six years disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I was back at the command post, cold despite wearing two coats, waiting for someone to tell me they had found my family.<\/p>\n<p>Mark moved through the photographs slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Front compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Rear storage.<\/p>\n<p>Engine.<\/p>\n<p>Damage along the starboard side.<\/p>\n<p>Mud inside the hull.<\/p>\n<p>A broken tackle box.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sophie leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Near the rear floor of the boat, partly hidden beneath a folded tarp, was something dark.<\/p>\n<p>Mark enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>A shoe.<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t one of the boys\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew every pair packed for that weekend because I had washed clothes the night before.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan wore black running shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Noah wore brown hiking shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb wore blue sneakers with white soles.<\/p>\n<p>The shoe in the photograph was larger.<\/p>\n<p>An adult shoe.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had worn waterproof fishing boots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t Daniel\u2019s either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Mark enlarged the photograph until the image became grainy.<\/p>\n<p>A dark athletic shoe with a light stripe.<\/p>\n<p>Only one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould belong to a rescuer,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n<p>Mark shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotos were taken before recovery teams climbed into the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen whose is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened additional images.<\/p>\n<p>The shoe appeared in three angles.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely inside Daniel\u2019s boat.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely adult-sized.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely not footwear Daniel had left home wearing.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie whispered, \u201cThere was another person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean immediately said, \u201cWe don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She spun toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow else does somebody else\u2019s shoe end up there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrevious trip. Somebody borrowed the boat. Daniel picked it up somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUncle Dean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying we don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His defensiveness irritated me, but Mark raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s right about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>Mark examined the image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf investigators noticed this at the time, they may have concluded it was old equipment or something previously left aboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it collected?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He searched the inventory.<\/p>\n<p>No shoe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A six-year-old photograph had preserved evidence no one considered evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at that shoe until the image blurred.<\/p>\n<p>Another adult.<\/p>\n<p>The missing vest.<\/p>\n<p>A child\u2019s missing whistle.<\/p>\n<p>Pieces that did not prove anything but no longer fitted the accident I had been given.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we find the original boat?\u201d Sophie asked.<\/p>\n<p>I had not thought of it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insurance company took possession after the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually salvage auction or disposal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He began typing.<\/p>\n<p>Records were old.<\/p>\n<p>Companies had merged.<\/p>\n<p>Names changed.<\/p>\n<p>After twenty minutes of searching and two phone calls, Mark found the insurer.<\/p>\n<p>Another call produced a claim number.<\/p>\n<p>A third produced the name of the salvage company that had taken Daniel\u2019s boat six years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The company still operated.<\/p>\n<p>Mark put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>A woman checked archived records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d she said eventually. \u201cWe handled that vessel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know what happened to it?\u201d Mark asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keys clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The woman returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSold at salvage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t usually release purchaser information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband and three sons disappeared from that boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then her tone softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking because I want to bother someone. There may have been evidence left in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t give you the buyer\u2019s personal information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hope dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I can contact them and ask permission to share yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took my number.<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, Dean stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went outside.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie watched him through the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s acting weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard what she did not say.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe something else.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could respond, Mark opened another image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed the boat\u2019s console.<\/p>\n<p>The ignition.<\/p>\n<p>A damaged GPS mounting bracket.<\/p>\n<p>A radio.<\/p>\n<p>Something scratched into the plastic beside the steering column.<\/p>\n<p>Three shallow lines.<\/p>\n<p>Then another mark crossing them.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie tilted her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat looks deliberate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She traced the air above the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour marks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four.<\/p>\n<p>The number meant nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Caleb.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever he waited somewhere, he scratched tally marks into things he was allowed to write on.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurant napkins.<\/p>\n<p>Homework margins.<\/p>\n<p>Fogged windows.<\/p>\n<p>He counted everything.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Cars.<\/p>\n<p>Birds.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the marks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would he be counting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not know.<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened the highest-resolution version.<\/p>\n<p>Three vertical scratches.<\/p>\n<p>One diagonal.<\/p>\n<p>Not four marks.<\/p>\n<p>Three marks crossed by one.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be initials?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lines seemed too primitive.<\/p>\n<p>Too hurried.<\/p>\n<p>Mark zoomed farther.<\/p>\n<p>Beside them was something else we had missed.<\/p>\n<p>A faint curved groove.<\/p>\n<p>Like a letter.<\/p>\n<p>D.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe nothing.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>For one terrified second, some impossible part of me expected Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name\u2019s Curtis Hale. I got a call from Atlantic Salvage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly my chair struck the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought it for the engine and trailer hardware. Hull was too damaged to restore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the hull?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind my workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six years.<\/p>\n<p>Rain.<\/p>\n<p>Snow.<\/p>\n<p>Sun.<\/p>\n<p>Rust.<\/p>\n<p>Animals.<\/p>\n<p>Time.<\/p>\n<p>But still there.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Hale, can we see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re welcome to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was already reaching for her coat.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was nearly two hours away.<\/p>\n<p>Dean insisted on driving separately.<\/p>\n<p>I did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Hale\u2019s property sat beyond a gravel road lined with maple trees.<\/p>\n<p>Behind a corrugated-metal workshop were old boat trailers, engines, tires, and machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s boat.<\/p>\n<p>The sight stopped me in the middle of the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Its aluminum hull was dull now.<\/p>\n<p>Weathered.<\/p>\n<p>Stripped of the engine and several fittings.<\/p>\n<p>But I recognized the dent.<\/p>\n<p>The broken windshield.<\/p>\n<p>The shape that had haunted my dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie touched my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis approached with a ring of keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know the story when I bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWouldn\u2019t have changed much anyway.
