UPLOAD STOPPED.<\/p>\n<p>One from Davis.<\/p>\n<p>WARD HEADING ROOF.<\/p>\n<p>One from an unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Kessler standing beside a helicopter.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Below it:<\/p>\n<p>BRING CROSS TO THE ROOF.<\/p>\n<p>Maya showed the others.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer said, \u201cTrap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross said, \u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at the timestamp.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty seconds old.<\/p>\n<p>Ward had found Kessler.<\/p>\n<p>Or Kessler had found Ward.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, Helix was seconds away from gaining two of three trustees.<\/p>\n<p>They needed Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the stairwell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a better idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross looked uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe give Ward exactly what she thinks she needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCross?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at his trustee token.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe credential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said it can\u2019t be cloned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can still authenticate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiometric confirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoice and pulse signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to spoof one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya said, \u201cVenn built systems people said couldn\u2019t be manipulated. Gabriel built safeguards people said couldn\u2019t exist. I\u2019m done respecting the word cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Ward.<\/p>\n<p>Maya answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward\u2019s voice was calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw Gabriel\u2019s video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo now you understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand you lie professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward ignored that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring Cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Safe Release remains dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can restart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll stop it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross rolled his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Maya asked, \u201cWhere\u2019s Kessler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he understands survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler understands escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes they are the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cYou want his trustee confirmation and Cross\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after Helix activates?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrown ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou rename it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still think institutions are changed by names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think criminals love system.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou touch them\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring Cross to the roof in ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at Leo\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<p>Davis called immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard enough over Cole\u2019s channel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo levels below the roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard has hotel surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can move Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they see sudden movement, Ward knows we\u2019re acting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet a separate team to the hotel quietly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross said, \u201cYou cannot give me to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is your plan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the trustee token.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake Ward think Helix is activating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer asked, \u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForce her to expose the migration nodes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Helix begins pre-activation, it polls every successor node.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Your face just told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross almost looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>Maya continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need Helix to complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe let it reveal itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMap every node before shutdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Gabriel\u2019s Safe Release can include them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelix will not poll without three trustee confirmations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard has hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler has his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yours can be simulated long enough to begin handshake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot without biometric authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked toward the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice came over the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know voice simulators?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCole?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole answered in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was a model airplane carrying an archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Nine minutes remained.<\/p>\n<p>Ward expected him on the roof.<\/p>\n<p>Maya had nine minutes to counterfeit the authorization of one of the most secret systems in the world.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time since Flight 412, she was not chasing someone else\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n<p>She was building her own.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
