video began in our garage.

I recognized it instantly.

The workbench.

The shelves.

The dent in the cabinet Daniel kept promising to fix.

Daniel stood with his back partly toward the camera, sorting equipment.

My knees weakened.

He was alive.

That was the first thing my mind understood.

Not the date.

Not Dean.

Daniel.

Alive.

Moving.

Breathing.

Annoyed because something would not fit into a dry bag.

I reached for the of rubbing the back of his neck when uncomfortable.

Daniel looked toward him.

Their voices were faint but clear.

“I’m not going, man,” Dean said.

I invited.

Dean was supposed to go on the fishing weekend.

And in six years, through searches, funerals without bodies, anniversaries, breakdowns, and countless conversations about that lake, he had never told me.

Not once.

Daniel lifted a life jacket from the bench.

He tested its buckle.

Then he looked at his brother.

“Come with that weekend than he ever admitted.

Maybe only slightly more.

Maybe not enough to matter.

But he had kept it from me.

After the third viewing, Sophie touched the screen.

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“Location history.”

My stomach tightened.

She opened a record synchronized from Daniel’s account.

Sunday morning.

The day Daniel and the boys disappeared.

One location appeared several miles from his normal route to the marina.

An outdoor-supply store.

I frowned.

“He didn’t mention stopping.”

“Would he?”

“Maybe.”

Sophie zoomed in.

The time
