Behind him, the fishing boat was secured to the trailer, its aluminum hull catching the pale Saturday morning light. The boys were laughing about something I had missed, all three of them incapable of standing still for longer than two seconds.

“Just look at me,” I called. “Three seconds. That is all I want.”

Ethan, our oldest son, groaned dramatically. “Mom, you already took five.”

“Four.”

“That one where Noah sneezed counts.”

“It does not.”

Noah shoved his brother with one elbow. Caleb, the youngest, wriggled free of Daniel’s arm and tried to make antlers behind Ethan’s head. Daniel caught him by the hood of his sweatshirt before he escaped the frame.

“Your mother wants one normal picture,” Daniel said.

“That sounds impossible with this family,” Ethan replied.

Daniel laughed.

I pressed the shutter.

At the time, my biggest concern was whether somebody had blinked.

I had no idea that photograph would become the border between two versions of my life.

Everything before it belonged to the woman standing barefoot in her driveway, complaining about sunscreen and reminding everyone to call when they reached the lake.

Everything afterward belonged to somebody else.

Daniel had spent nearly an hour preparing the truck before they left. He checked the trailer hitch twice, then crouched beside each wheel and tested the straps with both hands. Three life jackets sat neatly inside a waterproof equipment box. Another was already inside the boat. Emergency whistles, flashlights, first-aid supplies, bottled water, rain gear, and enough food for a weekend were packed beneath the seats.

He was always like that around water.

Careful to the point of irritation.

Daniel had been fishing that lake for three years. He knew which launch ramp became slippery after rain, which section of shoreline dropped abruptly into deep water, and where the current could become unexpectedly strong after a storm.

Before every trip, he checked the weather repeatedly.

Friday evening.

Again before bed.

Again before breakfast.

Sometimes I teased him about it.

“You know looking at the forecast every twenty minutes doesn’t change it.”

“It changes what I decide to do.”

That morning, he had studied the radar while eating toast at the kitchen counter.

“Anything bad?” I asked.

“Possible weather Sunday afternoon.”

“Then come back early.”

“That’s the plan.”

He said it casually because there was nothing unusual about the conversation.

There was nothing unusual about anything.

The boys were excited because Daniel had promised they could choose where to stop for breakfast on the way. Ethan wanted a diner near the highway. Noah wanted pancakes from somewhere else. Caleb cared only whether the place served hot chocolate.

Our three daughters were staying home with me.

Sophie, the oldest of the girls, was already awake and sitting on the porch steps with tangled hair and a blanket around her shoulders. Her younger sisters had refused to get out of bed just to say goodbye to people they expected to see the following evening.

Sophie watched Daniel finish tightening the boat strap.

“You’re bringing me something,” she told Ethan.

“What?”

“I don’t care. Boys already arguing over bait.

I replied:

Keep all three alive.

He sent back:

Trying.

A few minutes later came a photograph of Ethan holding a fishing rod while Noah made an exaggerated disgusted face behind him.

Caleb appeared in the corner wearing his life jacket even though they were apparently still near shore.

I smiled when I saw it.

Then I put the phone down and returned to folding laundry.

That small, stupid fact haunted me afterward.

My husband and sons were alive inside a photograph while I stood in the laundry room matching socks.

Saturday evening, Daniel called.

The boys shouted over one another while trying to tell me everything at once.

Ethan claimed Noah had nearly dropped an entire tackle box into the water. lake.

A tired-sounding man told me the office had closed earlier.

I called Daniel again.

Then Ethan.

Then Daniel.

Then Ethan.

I sent messages that grew progressively shorter.

Where are you?

Call me.

Daniel call me now.

At nine-forty, Sophie found me standing at the kitchen counter with my phone pressed against my ear.

She had stopped asking whether they were late.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know.”

The words came out too quickly.

She looked toward the untouched plates.

Her face changed.

“Should we call somebody?”

I wanted to tell her no.

Calling someone would make the fear real.

It would turn an overdue fishing trip into an emergency.

At 10:07 p.m., I called the police.

I still remember the dispatcher asking Daniel’s full name.

His date of birth.

The make and model of the truck.

The names and ages of the boys.

Each answer seemed to push me farther into a reality I did not want.

An officer arrived at our house twenty-three minutes later.

By then, I had called every hospital I could find near the lake.

Nothing.

The officer sat at our dining table while I showed him the last photograph.

“This was yesterday morning?”

“Yes.”

“And you spoke with your husband last out.

Then another.

I knew before they reached the porch that whatever ordinary life we had been living when Daniel pulled away from the driveway the previous morning was over.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: By Sunrise They Found Daniel’s Boat, but the Empty Seats Raised a Question
