Independent chains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo stays with me or Davis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI vote Davis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Reed said, \u201cWard will move now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Gabriel\u2019s second archive is outside controlled custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrown cannot quietly contain it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard knows Camila has it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Bell reported before disappearing, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Ward knows I know about recruitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at Gabriel\u2019s note again.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let her meet Ward alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll contact me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Crown did not spend two years profiling you for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Ward still wants to recruit me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Maya narrowed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed looked uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard believes people can be converted by giving them a problem only they can solve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis said, \u201cThat sounds ominous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll create a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne where doing the right thing helps Crown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya thought of Flight 412.<\/p>\n<p>Black Wake.<\/p>\n<p>The root key.<\/p>\n<p>Rahman.<\/p>\n<p>Every crisis had forced her to use Nightglass architecture in order to save people.<\/p>\n<p>Ward could frame the program not as corruption, but as dangerous infrastructure that responsible people needed to control.<\/p>\n<p>Maya hated how plausible that argument could sound in the wrong moment.<\/p>\n<p>Her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown Swiss number.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone in the room looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Maya answered.<\/p>\n<p>A woman spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Measured.<\/p>\n<p>Educated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMajor Lin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya knew before hearing the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelena Ward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been difficult to reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been busy landing your airplanes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward gave no audible reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not order Flight 412 sabotaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler exceeded authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Gabriel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel exceeded his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya felt something cold settle in her chest.<\/p>\n<p>Ward continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was brilliant. Brave. Also incapable of distinguishing between dangerous truth and useful disclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou marked him for containment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI approved containment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler chose death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou built the system that made him a target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ward said, \u201cYou understand systems better than most people around you. That is why Gabriel was asked to evaluate you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe recommended against recruitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy ignore him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked toward Reed.<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>Ward continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are exactly the person Nightglass needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already proved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy stopping your program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy using its architecture to save two aircraft, defeat Black Wake, recover compromised aviation data and expose Kessler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Ward had built her argument well.<\/p>\n<p>That made it more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see the contradiction,\u201d Ward said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see your sales pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not selling anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamila\u2019s archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why call?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Gabriel left you one problem he never solved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya felt her attention sharpen despite herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrown has no complete list of its customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ran Crown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI coordinated it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient distinction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNecessary one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler began selling access outside authorized channels years ago. Reed concealed some of it. Vale concealed more. Several customers built independent capability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning Nightglass can survive all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>He was listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel\u2019s second archive identifies the breakaway customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that\u2019s why you want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo identify systems that could still kill people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya remembered Reed\u2019s warning.<\/p>\n<p>A problem only she could solve.<\/p>\n<p>Ward had created it perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Hand over Gabriel\u2019s evidence, and maybe save lives.<\/p>\n<p>Refuse, and risk hidden Nightglass cells remaining active.<\/p>\n<p>Maya said, \u201cWe can use the archive without giving it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward\u2019s tone remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot without understanding the customer codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReed can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly partially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya already knew the next answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI built the code structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The trap.<\/p>\n<p>Not recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>Dependency.<\/p>\n<p>Ward wanted access because only she could decode some of Gabriel\u2019s evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Maya asked, \u201cWhere do you want to meet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis said instantly over the secure channel, \u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeneva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s note burned in Maya\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let her meet Ward alone.<\/p>\n<p>Maya said, \u201cYou\u2019ll get my terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward almost sounded amused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really were the correct choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Reed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Ward afraid of?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed was silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is afraid of something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya frowned.<\/p>\n<p>Reed continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelena has spent twenty years believing dangerous systems require people like her to keep them from becoming worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you prove Nightglass can be exposed, dismantled and replaced by accountable systems\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer completed the thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer entire justification disappears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked down at Gabriel\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p>She finally understood what he had been protecting her from.<\/p>\n<p>Not recruitment into a secret program.<\/p>\n<p>Recruitment into a worldview.<\/p>\n<p>One where secrecy always sounded practical.<\/p>\n<p>Where safety justified concealment.<\/p>\n<p>Where people like Ward decided whose lives could carry hidden risk.<\/p>\n<p>Maya folded the printed note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go to Geneva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019s voice came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked toward the secure room where Leo waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Camila?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe bring her in separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the objective?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Ward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe customer map.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward Reed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd proof Crown knew Gabriel was targeted before he flew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Maya saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Crown risk meeting was recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe night before Gabriel\u2019s flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was present?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard. Kessler. Vale.
