argue again.

Within thirty seconds, the Washington-bound aircraft was quietly placed under a security hold.

Passengers had not yet boarded.

The senator was still in an airport lounge.

Nobody outside a small group was told why the flight had stopped.

Maya watched airport operations on a monitor while technicians moved toward the aircraft under the cover of an unscheduled maintenance inspection.

Davis stood beside her.

“If they find the same module…”

“They will.”

“You sound certain.”

“Kessler likes systems.”

Maya pointed toward Gabriel’s manifest.

“He doesn’t improvise when repetition works.”

Twenty minutes later, the maintenance team reported.

The aircraft contained a recently replaced flight-control interface module.

Serial number legitimate.

Internal electronics counterfeit.

Davis swore softly.

Maya felt no satisfaction at being correct.

Mercer ordered the aircraft grounded and the senator discreetly relocated.

Then another technician called.

A second compromised component had been found.

Landing-gear control.

Same pattern as Flight 412.

Maya stared at the report.

“Two failure points.”

Davis nodded.

“Enough to create an accident that looks complicated.”

“Exactly.”

Mercer turned.

“So Kessler was targeting the senator.”

“Maybe.”

“What else would it be?”

Maya looked at the manifest.

“Who else is aboard?”

Staff.

Business travelers.

Families.

A retired judge.

Two defense contractors.

A journalist.

Then one name caught her attention.

Dr. Elias Venn.

Maya frowned.

“Who is Venn?”

Mercer searched.

“Aerospace electronics engineer.”

“For whom?”

The answer appeared.

Former chief technical officer of one of the original Nightglass subcontractors.

Maya pointed.

“That’s the target.”

Mercer looked skeptical.

“The senator chairs the audit committee.”

“Which makes perfect camouflage.”

Davis understood.

“Everyone would assume political motive if anything surfaced.”

Maya nodded.

“But Kessler built his empire around making the obvious explanation hide the real one.”

Mercer requested immediate protection for Venn.

Airport officers reached the gate lounge.

His seat was empty.

His carry-on remained beneath a chair.

Maya’s stomach tightened.

“When was he last seen?”

Security footage showed Venn leaving the lounge fourteen minutes earlier with a man wearing an airport maintenance uniform.

The man’s face was partially obscured.

Maya watched the footage.

“Freeze.”

The technician stopped it.

“Zoom on the hand.”

Mercer looked confused.

“Why?”

The maintenance worker carried his toolbox in his left hand.

His right wrist showed a dark mark.

Not enough.

Maya said, “Earlier.”

The footage reversed.

The man lifted his arm.

A distinctive watch appeared.

Silver case.

Black face.

Maya had seen it in Kessler’s video.

“It’s him.”

Mercer stared.

“Kessler?”

“Yes.”

Airport security erupted into motion.

Exits locked.

Police teams spread through service corridors.

Flights were held.

Baggage vehicles stopped.

Every camera feed became part of the search.

Maya watched Kessler guide Venn through a restricted door.

Venn did not appear restrained.

“He went willingly,” Davis said.

“Or Kessler gave him a reason.”

“Threat?”

“Probably.”

The footage continued.

Kessler showed Venn something on his phone.

Venn’s face changed.

Then he followed.

Maya whispered, “Family.”

Mercer looked at her.

“Kessler threatened someone Venn loves.”

Security traced them toward an underground service level.

Then cameras lost them.

Mercer ordered tactical teams down.

Maya studied the airport map.

Cargo tunnels.

Maintenance rooms.

Utility corridors.

Vehicle ramps.

A labyrinth.

Davis said, “They’ll find him.”

Maya shook her head.

“Kessler knows they will.”

“Then why stay inside the airport?”

“Because he needs something before leaving.”

“What?”

Maya looked toward Flight 412.

“The audit package.”

Mercer heard her.

“That aircraft is guarded.”

“Kessler doesn’t need to reach the plane.”

“Then?”

“Where did authorities move the cargo evidence?”

Mercer went still.

He called immediately.

The answer came.

Secure airport evidence storage.

Lower service level.

Maya stared at the map.

Exactly where Kessler had taken Venn.

“He isn’t escaping.”

“He’s retrieving evidence,” Davis said.

Mercer ordered the evidence vault reinforced.

No response came from the first security team stationed there.

A second team was dispatched.

They found one officer unconscious.

The other missing.

The vault door stood open.

The audit package was gone.

Maya felt anger more than surprise.

“Kessler knew every move before we made it.”

Mercer’s face hardened.

“There’s a leak.”

“Yes.”

“Inside my team?”

“Or airport security. Or somewhere else.”

Sterling spoke from behind them.

“You won’t catch him by protecting what you think he wants.”

Maya turned.

“Then help.”

Sterling looked at the airport map.

“Kessler always creates two objectives.”

“Explain.”

“One everyone sees.”

“The audit package.”

“Yes.”

“And the other?”

“The one that actually matters.”

Maya looked toward the missing Venn.

“Engineer.”

Sterling nodded.

“Venn built something for Nightglass.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

Maya’s patience snapped.

“You worked in this operation for years.”

“I handled compliance fraud. Kessler compartmentalized technical work.”

“What could Venn know that matters now?”

Sterling thought.

“Authentication.”

Maya frowned.

“For parts?”

“For certification databases.”

Davis understood.

“If investigators discover counterfeit serial numbers, they verify them against manufacturer records.”

“Yes.”

Sterling leaned forward.

“What if Kessler can change those records?”

Maya felt the scale of the scheme expand.

“He could make counterfeit components appear legitimate even after inspection.”

“Exactly.”

“And Venn built the access.”

“Possibly.”

Mercer asked, “Why kill him now?”

“Maybe he isn’t killing him,” Maya said.

“Then what?”

“Making him erase the trail.”

The tactical team reported movement near a service tunnel beneath Terminal Two.

A maintenance vehicle had left without authorization.

Cameras caught it approaching a perimeter gate.

Police vehicles converged.

The truck stopped.

Doors opened.

Officers surrounded it.

Inside they found Dr. Venn.

Alone.

Alive.

His wrists were bound.

A device had been taped to his chest.

Bomb squad personnel moved in.

Kessler was gone.

Maya watched the feed.

Again.

Two objectives.

Venn drew every officer toward the vehicle.

Where was Kessler?

She looked at the airport map.

Then at Flight 412.

Then at the evidence room.

The audit package was gone.

“What’s directly above the service tunnel?”

Mercer checked.

“Terminal rail station.”

“And beyond?”

“Parking structures.”

“Kessler switched levels.”

Police rushed toward the station.

Too late.

A train had departed four minutes earlier.

Maya stared at the route.

It connected directly to Madrid’s regional transit system.

Kessler had disappeared into the city.

Mercer slammed his phone onto the table.

“He has the audit package.”

“And maybe Vale’s information.”

“Vale is under guard.”

Maya turned.

“Is he?”

Mercer immediately called the hospital.

No answer from the officer outside Vale’s room.

Second call.

Nothing.

Maya felt dread settle.

“Send someone.”

Police arrived seven minutes later.

Vale’s room was empty.

The guard had been found unconscious in a supply closet.

No sign of forced removal.

Hospital cameras showed Vale walking out wearing scrubs beneath a borrowed coat.

“He escaped,” Mercer said.

Maya shook her head.

“Or someone helped him.”

A message arrived on Maya’s phone.

Unknown number.

No text.

Only a photograph.

She opened it.

Vale sat in the passenger seat of a moving car.

Alive.

His shoulder bandaged.

Beside him, barely visible, was the driver.

Maya enlarged the image.

Ethan Cole.

Her heart lurched.

“That’s impossible.”

Mercer looked.

“Cole is in custody in Texas.”

Maya stared at the scar over the driver’s right eyebrow.

Then at the captured man’s photograph.

Similar.

Not identical.

She suddenly understood.

“Cole isn’t Cole.”

Mercer called Texas.

Fingerprints were rechecked.

The captured man was not Ethan Cole.

His name was Martin Shaw, another Kessler security contractor who had undergone minor facial alteration and carried Cole’s credentials.

The real Ethan Cole was in Spain.

With Vale.

Maya’s phone vibrated again.

This time a text appeared.

GABRIEL LEFT ONE THING OUT.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY.

A location followed.

An abandoned aviation museum outside Madrid.

Davis read over her shoulder.

“No.”

Maya looked at him.

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Mercer shook his head.

“You are not going alone.”

Maya studied the message.

Something felt wrong.

Kessler wanted her frightened.

Vale wanted her informed.

Cole wanted something else.

Three motives.

One invitation.

Then Maya noticed the phrasing.

Gabriel left one thing out.

Not Kessler.

Not Vale.

Gabriel.

Someone knew enough about the archive to understand what it contained.

Maya typed nothing.

She looked toward sleeping Leo.

Then toward the disassembled model airplane.

Gabriel had hidden evidence with a child because he trusted Maya to understand what mattered when the time came.

She finally understood what he had meant in his video.

Go home afterward.

He had not been telling her to abandon the truth.

He had been telling her not to sacrifice herself to it.

Maya handed the phone to Mercer.

“We do this my way.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 12:
