poison.”

“Yes.”

“And helped plan the diversion.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he now?”

Sterling’s face emptied.

“That’s why I demanded to speak with you.”

Maya felt the first true fear she had experienced since landing.

“Where is Vale?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why me?”

“Because he found Gabriel’s archive.”

Maya stopped breathing.

Sterling leaned forward as far as the restraints allowed.

“He told me two days ago that Gabriel had hidden the original evidence with someone no one would suspect.”

“Who?”

Sterling looked at her.

“You.”

Maya shook her head.

“No.”

“He believed you had it.”

“I don’t.”

“He didn’t believe that.”

“Why?”

Sterling swallowed.

“Because three weeks ago someone accessed an old encrypted storage account using your military authentication key.”

Maya stared.

“That key was revoked when I resigned.”

“Apparently not completely.”

“I haven’t used it.”

“I believe you.”

She almost laughed.

“You don’t get points for believing me.”

“Then listen anyway.”

His voice had changed.

Urgency replaced calculation.

“Vale thinks Gabriel gave you something you don’t know you have.”

Maya thought about every box, letter, photograph, flight patch, book and personal item that had passed through her hands after Gabriel’s death.

Nothing.

Then one memory surfaced.

Small.

Ordinary.

Easy to dismiss.

After the memorial, Camila had given Leo a model F-16 Gabriel had kept on his desk.

Leo loved it.

He had carried it through three homes.

Maya’s stomach tightened.

Sterling saw the change in her face.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“What did you remember?”

Maya stood.

The investigators moved.

Sterling suddenly leaned forward.

“Maya.”

She turned.

“If Vale realizes you survived the flight, he’ll assume you know what he knows.”

“What does he know?”

Sterling’s voice dropped.

“That the archive identifies every person involved.”

Maya looked toward the door.

Leo was outside somewhere with Davis and an airport employee.

Her chest tightened.

Sterling said, “Henley is already dead.”

Maya turned back sharply.

“What?”

“Car accident six weeks ago.”

“Was it an accident?”

Sterling gave her a bleak look.

“I stopped believing that after today.”

Maya pushed open the interview-room door.

Davis stood at the far end of the corridor.

Leo was beside him.

Safe.

Maya exhaled.

Then she saw Leo holding a small gray backpack.

The same backpack she had packed for the trip.

A plastic model airplane protruded from the partially open zipper.

Gabriel’s model F-16.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Toy Gabriel Left Behind Contains More
