Full brace briefing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The response was professional.<\/p>\n<p>Maya heard fear underneath it.<\/p>\n<p>She looked back toward the closed door.<\/p>\n<p>Leo would wake soon.<\/p>\n<p>Someone would tell him to brace.<\/p>\n<p>He would look toward seat 8A and find his mother gone.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since entering the cockpit, Maya almost lost her concentration.<\/p>\n<p>She pictured his face.<\/p>\n<p>The confusion first.<\/p>\n<p>Then fear.<\/p>\n<p>She forced the image aside.<\/p>\n<p>Being beside him during impact would not help him.<\/p>\n<p>Landing the airplane would.<\/p>\n<p>She slid into the right seat after the doctor and attendants moved Reyes carefully out of the way.<\/p>\n<p>Davis looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou understand I can\u2019t formally make you first officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking you to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya adjusted the seat and restraints.<\/p>\n<p>The controls felt foreign in scale.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Commercial.<\/p>\n<p>Designed for endurance and efficiency, not the violent responsiveness of a fighter.<\/p>\n<p>She placed her hands lightly on them.<\/p>\n<p>Davis noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe airplane will tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faint smile appeared on his face and disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They descended through ten thousand feet.<\/p>\n<p>Sterling attempted the cockpit interphone again.<\/p>\n<p>Davis ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later, the lead attendant called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaptain, Mr. Sterling is demanding that we divert to a different airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She named a smaller coastal airport.<\/p>\n<p>Davis immediately shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunway\u2019s shorter. Weather\u2019s worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s suspicion sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does he want that airport?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says company operations can support us there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya asked, \u201cDoes your current airport have law enforcement waiting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The implication needed no explanation.<\/p>\n<p>He told the attendant, \u201cWe continue as planned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sterling\u2019s voice suddenly came over the interphone from a cabin handset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis cut him off.<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>No innocent executive should care that strongly which safe airport received a damaged aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>A burst of turbulence rocked them.<\/p>\n<p>The hydraulic pressure dropped sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Davis selected landing gear down.<\/p>\n<p>Two green indications appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Nose gear.<\/p>\n<p>Left main.<\/p>\n<p>The right main remained amber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on,\u201d Davis muttered.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing changed.<\/p>\n<p>Maya scanned the hydraulic page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny gravity extension?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUse it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis initiated the alternate extension procedure.<\/p>\n<p>They waited.<\/p>\n<p>The runway appeared intermittently through sheets of rain.<\/p>\n<p>Approach lights stretched toward them like a narrow glowing ladder.<\/p>\n<p>The right gear indication remained unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>Davis contacted the tower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an uncertain right main gear status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emergency equipment positioned along the runway.<\/p>\n<p>Fire trucks.<\/p>\n<p>Rescue crews.<\/p>\n<p>Ambulances.<\/p>\n<p>Maya saw flashing lights through the rain.<\/p>\n<p>She had landed damaged fighters before.<\/p>\n<p>But never with hundreds of people behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Never with Leo.<\/p>\n<p>The thought did not make her afraid anymore.<\/p>\n<p>It made everything simpler.<\/p>\n<p>There was no option except getting down.<\/p>\n<p>Davis glanced at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the right gear collapses, the airplane will yaw hard and drop that wing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReverse thrust may make it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll use asymmetric power if we need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRudder authority will change as speed falls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll follow it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied her for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really were good at this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya kept her eyes forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The runway grew larger.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred feet.<\/p>\n<p>Rain hammered the windshield.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft drifted in the crosswind.<\/p>\n<p>Davis corrected.<\/p>\n<p>Maya backed him up gently.<\/p>\n<p>No competing input.<\/p>\n<p>No ego.<\/p>\n<p>Only coordination.<\/p>\n<p>Three hundred feet.<\/p>\n<p>The right gear light stayed amber.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said, \u201cWe may only get one chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya answered, \u201cThen make it the one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two hundred feet.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft settled.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty.<\/p>\n<p>Davis flared.<\/p>\n<p>The left main gear touched first.<\/p>\n<p>Then the right.<\/p>\n<p>A violent shudder exploded through the airframe.<\/p>\n<p>The right wing dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers screamed behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Maya immediately added differential control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, don\u2019t overcorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The airplane veered.<\/p>\n<p>Maya applied rudder.<\/p>\n<p>Davis adjusted thrust.<\/p>\n<p>Something beneath the right side slammed against the runway.<\/p>\n<p>For one horrifying second Maya expected the wing to collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Then a metallic clunk reverberated through the structure.<\/p>\n<p>The right gear indication turned green.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocked!\u201d Maya shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Davis brought the airplane straight.<\/p>\n<p>Reverse thrust roared.<\/p>\n<p>Speed bled away.<\/p>\n<p>The runway lights stopped rushing past and began crawling.<\/p>\n<p>Finally the aircraft came to a halt.<\/p>\n<p>Neither pilot spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Rain drummed on the windshield.<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019s hands remained wrapped around the controls.<\/p>\n<p>Maya realized hers were trembling.<\/p>\n<p>Then the cabin erupted.<\/p>\n<p>Cheers.<\/p>\n<p>Crying.<\/p>\n<p>Applause.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of voices released fear at once.<\/p>\n<p>Maya unfastened her restraints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to get to my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the cockpit door.<\/p>\n<p>Police lights flashed beyond the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Flight attendants were crying while still issuing instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers clapped when Maya appeared, but she barely noticed them.<\/p>\n<p>Her attention fixed on row eight.<\/p>\n<p>Leo sat upright beneath the blue blanket.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were wide.<\/p>\n<p>When he saw her, he pushed the blanket aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya reached him in seconds.<\/p>\n<p>He threw his arms around her neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held him so tightly that he made a small protesting noise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelping the pilots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas something broken?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you fix it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya closed her eyes against his hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all fixed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo leaned back and studied her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re shaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you scared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She considered lying.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she said, \u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo hugged her again.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, passengers were beginning to stand.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, emergency crews approached.<\/p>\n<p>And near the forward door, Richard Sterling was watching Maya.<\/p>\n<p>He no longer looked calm.<\/p>\n<p>He looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>Their eyes met across the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Then he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Not with relief.<\/p>\n<p>With
