Daddy Derek. Elena. Sophie."

She included herself last.

"Me."

The room became quieter.

Not silent.

Just different.

I looked at Derek.

He looked at Elena.

Elena looked at me.

And Sophie kept eating.

Maisie noticed none of it.

"Grandma family too," she continued. "Grandpa. Aunt Vanny. Aunt Brinn. Uncle Ky. Cameron."

She thought.

"Maybe Lily."

I laughed.

"Lily from preschool?"

"She my best friend."

"That does not automatically make her legally family."

Maisie shrugged.

"She family."

Apparently the case was closed.

The conversation moved on.

Mine didn't.

For the rest of breakfast, the word stayed with me.

Family.

I had spent years defending that word from people who used it as leverage.

You help because we're family.

You forgive because we're family.

You come because we're family.

You tolerate because we're family.

Now my daughter was using the same word with no obligation attached.

To her, family was simply the people who kept showing up.

That should have felt beautiful.

Mostly, it did.

The uncomfortable part arrived after everyone left.

I was loading the dishwasher when Maisie asked, "Elena family?"

I turned.

"You think she is."

"Yes."

"Then why are you asking?"

She frowned.

"You think?"

Children had an irritating talent for locating whatever adults hoped to leave undefined.

I dried my hands.

"I think Elena is becoming part of our family."

"Becoming?"

"Getting closer."

She accepted that.

Then:

"Sophie my sister now?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because that's not exactly how it works."

"How work?"

I regretted starting.

"Sometimes when adults marry, their children become stepsisters."

"Daddy marry Elena?"

"I don't know."

"When?"

"I don't know."

"Why you don't know?"

"Because I am not Daddy Derek."

She stared at me.

"Ask him."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because whether he marries Elena is his decision."

Maisie considered this carefully.

Then said, "You can marry someone."

I nearly dropped the plate.

"Thank you for permission."

"You need husband."

"No, I don't."

She looked genuinely concerned.

"Everybody need husband."

"Elena doesn't have one."

"She have Daddy Derek."

"Not a husband."

"Grandma have Grandpa."

"Yes."

"Aunt Vanny no husband."

"Correct."

Maisie brightened.

"You marry Aunt Vanny."

I laughed so loudly she jumped.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Vanessa and I are friends."

"You love her."

"I do."

"Then marry."

"Marriage is a different kind of love."

Her expression suggested adults had designed an unnecessarily complicated system.

She wasn't wrong.

That evening, after she slept, I found myself thinking about the question she hadn't actually asked.

Why wasn't I with anyone?

For years, the answer had been obvious.

Survival.

Pregnancy.

A newborn.

Work.

Family conflict.

Derek's return.

Custody arrangements.

Therapy.

There had always been something more urgent.

But urgency had faded.

Maisie was five.

My job was stable.

My family was healthier.

Derek was reliable.

I had built the life I once thought I needed before I could risk anything else.

And now?

I wasn't sure I knew how to risk anything else.

Vanessa diagnosed the problem in under four minutes.

"You are terrified of dating."

"I am not."

"You haven't been on a date in five years."

"I've been busy."

"You alphabetized your spice drawer last month."

"That was useful."

"You had time."

I glared at her across the restaurant table.

She smiled.

"I don't need a relationship."

"Correct."

"I like my life."

"Also correct."

"I don't feel incomplete."

"Still correct."

"So what's the problem?"

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Nothing, unless you're using contentment as camouflage."

I hated that sentence.

"Camouflage for what?"

"Fear."

There it was.

Apparently everyone in my life had become professionally trained to annoy me.

"I don't want chaos."

"Then don't date chaotic people."

"I don't want anyone around Maisie."

"Then don't introduce anyone until you're ready."

"I don't want to reorganize my life."

"Then don't."

She took a sip of water.

"See how boundaries work?"

"You're insufferable."

"I learned from you."

I looked away.

Vanessa softened.

"I'm not telling you to date."

"Good."

"I'm asking whether you're not dating because you genuinely don't want to or because wanting someone would give them the power to disappoint you."

That one reached somewhere deeper.

Derek had disappointed me.

Mom had.

Dad had.

Brinn and Kyle had.

Every relationship that mattered had eventually asked me to survive some form of betrayal.

I had learned repair.

I had learned boundaries.

What I had not learned was how to enter something new without knowing where the damage would come from.

"Maybe I don't want to find out."

Vanessa nodded.

"That's allowed."

No challenge.

No motivational speech.

That made the answer harder.

A week later, Dr. Chen introduced me to someone named Marcus Bell.

Not romantically.

That was important.

Marcus was an architect consulting on the Portland pediatric expansion.

He was forty.

Divorced.

No children.

I learned those details accidentally over three months of meetings.

He was funny without trying to dominate rooms.

He listened.

He disagreed without turning disagreement into combat.

And he had an unnerving habit of remembering details.

One Wednesday, after a meeting ran late, he said, "You have your family dinner tonight, right?"

I looked at him.

"How do you know that?"

"You mention it every Wednesday."

"I do?"

"Usually when you're trying to end meetings on time."

I smiled.

"Then yes."

He closed his laptop.

"Go."

That was all.

No invitation.

No flirtation.

No pressure.

Two weeks later, he asked if I wanted coffee after work.

I assumed he meant professionally.

Halfway through, I realized he did not.

The realization made me so uncomfortable that I became absurdly formal.

Marcus noticed.

"Did I accidentally turn this into a job interview?"

"No."

"You just asked about my five-year professional goals."

I covered my face.

"Sorry."

He laughed.

"You're fine."

"I'm bad at this."

"Coffee?"

"No."

I lowered my hands.

"This."

He understood.

"Dating?"

I winced at the word.

"Apparently."

Marcus leaned back.

"We don't have to call it that."

"That feels dishonest."

"Fair."

He smiled.

"Then it's a date."

I laughed despite myself.

"Okay."

We talked another hour.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No immediate chemistry worthy of a movie.

No revelation.

I simply enjoyed myself.

That frightened me more than if I hadn't.

At the hotel that night, I stared at Marcus's message.

"Made it home. I had a good time."

I typed three responses and deleted all of them.

Finally:

"Me too."

Then I threw the phone onto the bed as though it had become dangerous.

The next morning, he asked if I wanted dinner the following Wednesday.

I said yes.

I told no one.

Not Vanessa.

Not Mom.

Certainly not Derek.

For three weeks, Marcus existed in a private corner of my life.

Coffee.

Dinner.

A walk along the river after work.

One phone call.

Nothing physical beyond a brief hug.

I liked the slowness.

I liked that he didn't demand access to the rest of my life simply because we were getting to know each other.

Then Vanessa found out.

Of course she did.

She saw his name appear on my phone while we were having lunch.

"Marcus."

"Don't."

"Who is Marcus?"

"Someone from work."

"Someone from work sends you a message saying, 'Looking forward to Wednesday' with a smiley face?"

"Apparently."

Vanessa stared.

I continued eating.

"Jenna."

"No."

"You are dating."

"Quietly."

Her eyes widened.

"You've been secretly dating?"

"Three dates."

"Three?"

"Vanessa."

She grabbed my hand.

"My baby is growing up."

I pulled away.

"I regret telling you anything."

"You didn't tell me. I conducted an investigation."

She became serious.

"Do you like him?"

"Yes."

That answer came too easily.

Vanessa noticed.

"Oh."

"Don't."

"No, that's good."

"I know."

"Are you scared?"

"Yes."

"Also good."

"Why?"

"Because it means you're paying attention."

I didn't fully agree.

But I understood.

That weekend, Derek came by for pickup.

He noticed something too.

"You seem different."

I looked at him.

"Different how?"

"I don't know."

He narrowed his eyes.

"Happy."

"That is insulting."

He laughed.

Then Maisie ran out carrying her backpack.

The moment passed.

I almost told him.

I didn't.

Not because I owed him information about my dating life.

I didn't.

But if Marcus continued becoming important, eventually the same rules would apply to me that I had demanded from Derek.

That thought stayed with me.

Fairness is easy when the rule constrains someone else.

Much harder when it reaches you.

Marcus and I had our fourth date in Seattle.

That was significant.

Until then, he belonged to Portland.

Work.

Hotels.

A contained world.

Inviting him into Seattle felt like letting him approach the perimeter of my real life.

We met at a restaurant near the water.

He arrived first.

I sat across from him.

"You look nervous."

"I'm not."

"You're rearranging the silverware."

I stopped.

"Occupational habit."

"You're a nurse, not a table inspector."

I laughed.

Then he asked, "Does anyone know about me?"

Direct.

I appreciated that.

"Vanessa."

"Who's Vanessa?"

"My best friend."

"The one you almost married?"

I stared.

Then remembered telling him about Maisie's suggestion.

"Yes."

He smiled.

"Anyone else?"

"No."

Marcus nodded.

Not offended.

"Is that because you don't think this is serious?"

"I don't know what this is."

"Okay."

"Is that a problem?"

"No."

He paused.

"But I should tell you what I want."

My body tightened.

He noticed.

"I'm not proposing."

"Good."

"I'd like to keep seeing you."

I waited.

"I'd like this to have the possibility of becoming serious."

Possibility.

Not demand.

That helped.

"And I understand you have a daughter."

I became still.

"She comes first."

"Yes."

"I'm not asking to meet her."

"Good."

"I'm asking whether there's room in your life for someone eventually."

There it was.

The actual question.

Not whether I liked Marcus.

Whether I had built my life with a door.

I looked through the restaurant window.

For years, safety had meant control over access.

I decided who entered.

When.

How far.

That had saved me.

But protection could become architecture.

You could build such strong walls that eventually you forgot to include doors.

"I think there is," I said.

Marcus smiled.

"That's enough."

When I returned home, Mom had left a voicemail.

Nothing urgent.

Just asking about Maisie's school picture.

I called her.

We talked.

Then, without planning to, I said, "I'm seeing someone."

Mom went silent.

"Mom?"

"I'm here."

"Say something."

"I'm trying very hard not to say too much."

I laughed.

"Good."

"Do you like him?"

"Yes."

"Is he kind?"

"So far."

"Does he know about Maisie?"

"Yes."

"Have they met?"

"No."

Mom paused.

Then said only, "I'm happy you're happy."

No interrogation.

No wedding speculation.

No warning.

I felt unexpectedly emotional.

"Thanks."

The next person I told was Derek.

He was standing in my kitchen the following afternoon.

"There's someone I'm dating."

He blinked.

"Oh."

"His name is Marcus."

Another pause.

"Okay."

I waited.

Derek looked toward Maisie's room.

"Does he know about her?"

"Yes."

"Has he met her?"

"No."

"How long?"

"About two months."

Derek absorbed that.

Then asked, "Are you serious?"

"I don't know."

He nodded.

No jealousy.

At least none I could see.

No claim.

Then:

"When you decide they're meeting, can we talk first?"

The symmetry almost made me laugh.

"Yes."

Derek smiled faintly.

"Good."

"Anything else?"

He hesitated.

"Is he good to you?"

That question surprised me.

"Yes."

"Then okay."

That evening, Marcus called.

We talked for forty minutes.

Near the end, he said, "My Portland contract ends in May."

I sat straighter.

"What?"

"I found out today."

"What happens then?"

"I go back to Seattle full-time."

I hadn't known he lived in Seattle.

Not exactly.

He kept an apartment there but had spent most weekdays in Portland during the project.

"You're moving back?"

"Basically."

Something inside me shifted.

Until then, distance had protected me.

One day a week.

Occasional dates.

Separate worlds.

May would remove that buffer.

Marcus seemed to understand the silence.

"Too close?"

I smiled despite myself.

"Maybe."

"Should I relocate to Alaska?"

"Possibly."

He laughed.

Then became serious.

"We don't have to change anything."

But of course things would change.

Proximity always changed relationships.

Derek had taught me that.

My parents had.

Now Marcus might.

After we hung up, I stood in Maisie's doorway.

She was asleep.

One elephant under her chin.

The other on the floor.

I picked it up.

Set it beside her.

For years, I had believed protecting her meant reducing uncertainty.

Now I understood that childhood would contain uncertainty no matter how carefully I planned.

People would arrive.

People would leave.

Relationships would change.

My job was not to make change impossible.

It was to teach her what trustworthy love looked like while change happened.

And if I expected her to learn that, eventually I would have to practice it too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Marcus Met Maisie Under Rules I Thought Would Protect Everyone, Until One Innocent Question Revealed What I Still Hadn’t Forgiven

The word came out over pancakes.
