Her father and I share custody."

"How long have you been divorced?"

"Six years."

"Good relationship?"

"Functional."

I nodded.

She smiled slightly.

"That was a very medical answer."

"It's an occupational hazard."

"I work in family law."

I stared at her.

Of course.

Derek rubbed his forehead.

"I told you that."

"No, you didn't."

"I thought I did."

Elena laughed.

"This explains why he is afraid of both of us."

I laughed before I intended to.

The tension loosened.

Elena told me about Sophie.

Eight.

Obsessed with animals.

Sensitive.

Curious about Maisie because Derek talked about her constantly.

That detail surprised me.

"He does?"

Derek looked embarrassed.

Elena answered.

"Constantly."

I looked at him.

He suddenly became fascinated by his coffee.

I continued asking questions.

What did Elena think about discipline?

Boundaries?

Blended families?

Privacy?

She answered without trying to impress me.

Sometimes she disagreed.

That actually helped.

People who agree with everything during a first meeting are usually selling something.

Then Elena asked me one.

"What do you want me to know?"

The question stopped me.

Not what are the rules?

What do you want me to know?

I thought about Maisie.

"She doesn't owe adults emotional comfort."

Elena nodded.

"If she's shy, don't make her hug you."

"Of course."

"If she asks questions about Derek and me, don't answer things you don't know."

"I won't."

"If you and Derek ever have problems, none of that becomes hers."

Elena's expression changed.

"Absolutely."

I looked at her carefully.

"And if this ends—"

Derek shifted.

Elena did not.

"If it ends, we handle it like adults."

"What does that mean?"

"It means Sophie doesn't suddenly lose Maisie without explanation if they've become attached."

That answer surprised me.

She continued.

"And Maisie doesn't wake up one day and discover I vanished because Derek and I couldn't tolerate being uncomfortable."

The table became quiet.

She understood the actual fear.

Not romance.

Disappearance.

"Thank you," I said.

She nodded.

The meeting lasted almost two hours.

When I returned home, Vanessa was waiting with Maisie.

She looked at my face.

"Well?"

"I liked her."

Vanessa gasped theatrically.

"Oh no."

"Shut up."

"This is terrible."

"She works in family law."

"Even worse. Competent."

"She seems normal."

"Disaster."

I threw a cushion at her.

Maisie laughed.

"What funny?"

"Aunt Vanessa is being annoying."

"Always."

Vanessa stared at her.

"I withdraw my free childcare."

Maisie climbed into her lap.

"No."

"Fine."

Later, after Maisie was asleep, Vanessa poured tea.

"What's really wrong?"

I looked at her.

"Nothing."

"Jenna."

I hated everyone who knew me.

I sat down.

"She could be good for Maisie."

"Yes."

"That's scary."

"Why?"

Because if Elena was awful, I could reject her.

If Elena was good, I had to make space.

That was harder.

"I spent years learning to protect our life."

Vanessa nodded.

"And?"

"Sometimes I don't know how to tell when protection becomes possession."

Vanessa's face softened.

"That is probably why you're asking."

"What does that mean?"

"Controlling people don't usually worry they're controlling."

"That seems overly generous."

"Maybe."

She sipped her tea.

"But you are allowed to need time."

I nodded.

Two weeks later, we arranged the first intentional meeting.

Park.

One hour.

Derek.

Elena.

Sophie.

Me.

Maisie.

It felt absurdly formal.

Maisie did not care.

She saw Sophie and immediately asked about the guinea pig.

Within five minutes, both girls were digging in wet sand.

Elena stood beside me.

"They seem okay."

"So far."

"You can breathe."

"I am breathing."

"Technically."

I looked at her.

She smiled.

I smiled back.

Derek and Sophie were arguing about whether a pinecone could become a dinosaur egg.

Maisie joined.

Elena watched them.

Then quietly said, "He loves her."

I knew which child she meant.

"I know."

"He talks about what he missed."

My shoulders tightened.

Elena noticed.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

I shook my head.

"It's okay."

She looked toward Derek.

"He doesn't use it to ask for sympathy."

Good.

"He uses it as a warning to himself."

That was better.

Maisie suddenly ran toward us.

"Mommy!"

"What?"

"Sophie come my house?"

I froze.

Sophie stood behind her looking hopeful.

Derek looked terrified.

Elena waited.

Everyone had apparently decided I was the Supreme Court.

I nearly said, "Not today."

That would have been safe.

Reasonable.

Then I asked myself why.

Was there danger?

No.

Was the plan too fast?

Maybe.

Would saying yes violate a meaningful boundary?

No.

Would saying no protect Maisie—or protect me from discomfort?

That answer was clear.

I crouched.

"Not today."

Maisie's face fell.

I continued.

"But next Saturday, Sophie and Elena can come for lunch."

Maisie screamed.

Sophie screamed.

Derek laughed.

Elena smiled.

I stood.

My stomach still felt tight.

That was okay.

Growth apparently did not require comfort.

It required choice.

The following Saturday, Elena and Sophie came to my apartment.

Maisie showed Sophie every toy she owned.

Derek brought groceries.

Elena cut vegetables.

I cooked.

At one point, I stepped into the hallway and looked back.

Four people in my kitchen.

Another child at my table.

Derek laughing.

Elena arguing with him about onions.

Maisie chasing Sophie with a dinosaur.

For one second, grief moved through me.

This could have been dangerous.

A new family forming around my daughter.

Instead, another thought followed.

It did not have to replace ours.

Families were not chairs.

There was not a fixed number of seats.

That evening, after everyone left, Maisie climbed onto my lap.

"Sophie my sister?"

I nearly inhaled my tea.

"No."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Daddy Derek and Elena aren't married."

She considered that.

"If married, sister?"

"Sort of."

"Okay."

Then she asked:

"You marry Daddy Derek?"

I stared at her.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because we aren't in love like that."

She accepted this surprisingly well.

"Daddy Derek marry Elena?"

"I don't know."

"Grandma marry Grandpa."

"Yes."

"Aunt Vanny marry?"

"No."

"Uncle Ky?"

"No."

She frowned.

"Everybody confusing."

I laughed.

"Correct."

She leaned against me.

Then said, "I like Elena."

I swallowed.

"I'm glad."

"You like?"

I hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

"Yes."

Maisie smiled.

And that was when I realized the boundary Derek had crossed had led somewhere unexpected.

Not because crossing it was acceptable.

It wasn't.

But because repairing it required more than enforcing a consequence.

It required deciding whether I was brave enough to let trustworthy people move closer after they made mistakes.

That was the part of boundaries nobody had taught me.

Walls were easy.

Doors required judgment.

And I was finally learning how to use both.
