color?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPurple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa say brave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said she handled it well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maisie shouted, \u201cBRAVE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay. Brave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the call ended, I sat on the edge of the hotel bed.<\/p>\n<p>They had handled it.<\/p>\n<p>Without me.<\/p>\n<p>That should have felt reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I felt irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>The thought frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>Was usefulness still so deeply connected to love that I believed being needed constantly was proof of importance?<\/p>\n<p>I called Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>She answered, \u201cWhat catastrophe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaisie scraped her knee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat monster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I. Knees are dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her how I felt.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cYou know this is the same thing your mom did with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe liked you being capable because it made her life easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou like being indispensable because it makes you feel secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed badly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it&#39;s related.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated her.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Maisie can be okay without you for two weeks,\u201d Vanessa continued, \u201cthat doesn&#39;t make you less her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna, children are supposed to become okay without us in increasing amounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not discussing college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. We&#39;re discussing a Band-Aid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are allowed to be central without being everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>On day ten, Derek sent a photograph of Maisie asleep on his couch.<\/p>\n<p>He had moved her there after preschool because the heater in my apartment had stopped working.<\/p>\n<p>He texted:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaintenance says tomorrow. She&#39;s staying with me tonight unless you object.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the message.<\/p>\n<p>Once, the idea of Maisie sleeping at Derek&#39;s would have been impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Now the counselor had already approved overnight progression.<\/p>\n<p>We simply hadn&#39;t done one yet.<\/p>\n<p>Not officially.<\/p>\n<p>I typed:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she have pajamas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToothbrush?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElephants?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A photograph arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Both elephants on the pillow.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then typed:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first time my daughter slept in her father&#39;s home.<\/p>\n<p>I was eight hundred miles away.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about that sentence should have been easy.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>But I survived it.<\/p>\n<p>So did she.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Derek called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe slept until six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is better than home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assume this means I win custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye, Derek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, he said, \u201cShe did fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rolled my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you didn&#39;t call me every hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMassive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The training week continued.<\/p>\n<p>On the final night, our group went to dinner.<\/p>\n<p>For two hours, I talked about work.<\/p>\n<p>Not parenting.<\/p>\n<p>Not family.<\/p>\n<p>Not Derek.<\/p>\n<p>Not boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Just ideas.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten how much I missed having an identity that did not begin with crisis management.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned to the hotel, there was a voicemail from Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing urgent. Call when you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing urgent.<\/p>\n<p>Three of my favorite words.<\/p>\n<p>I called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father wants to take Maisie to the zoo tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Kyle wants to join them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t want an itinerary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am resisting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t make it weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cI meant that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I woke before my alarm.<\/p>\n<p>My flight home left at noon.<\/p>\n<p>I packed quickly.<\/p>\n<p>At the airport, Derek texted:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s counting sleeps wrong and thinks you arrived yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I replied:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccurate sense of time for this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I landed in Seattle, I practically ran through baggage claim.<\/p>\n<p>Derek and Maisie waited near the exit.<\/p>\n<p>She spotted me first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMOMMY!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ran.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped my bag.<\/p>\n<p>She slammed into me with enough force to make me stagger.<\/p>\n<p>I held her so tightly she complained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo squeeze!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t loosen immediately.<\/p>\n<p>She smelled like shampoo and crackers.<\/p>\n<p>Home.<\/p>\n<p>Derek stood several feet away smiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWelcome back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shifted Maisie onto my hip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor making it possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to thank me for parenting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence mattered.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, I might have cried.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded wrong.<\/p>\n<p>My body responded instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything around me disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tightened my grip around Maisie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad kept talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was making coffee. Then she said she felt dizzy.
