13 – Derek’s Transfer Offer Forced Him to Choose Between Career Security and the Ordinary Presence He Had Spent Years Learning to Earn

For three days after Derek told me about Denver, neither of us made a decision.

That restraint was new.

The old versions of us would have acted faster.

He would have avoided the conversation until circumstances decided for him.

I would have responded before I understood what I was afraid of.

Instead, we waited.

Not passively.

Carefully.

Derek sent me the details of the transfer.

Salary increase.

Better title.

Relocation package.

Housing assistance.

A position that would put him on a faster promotion track.

On paper, it was the kind of offer people were supposed to celebrate.

I understood immediately why he was tempted.

That made everything harder.

He came over on Thursday after Maisie went to sleep.

We sat at my dining table with his laptop between us.

For once, there was no counselor.

No lawyer.

No parent.

No audience.

Just two people trying not to damage a child while making adult decisions.

“How much travel?” I asked.

“Less than my current job.”

“That part is good.”

“Yes.”

“If you stay here?”

He rotated the laptop toward me.

“My department is shrinking.”

“How soon?”

“Probably within a year.”

“Probably?”

He gave me a tired look.

“You know how companies talk.”

I did.

No one officially says your position is becoming unstable.

They say there are strategic realignments.

Efficiency reviews.

Organizational shifts.

Language designed to make uncertainty sound intentional.

“So Denver gives you stability.”

“Yes.”

“And more money.”

“Yes.”

“And it puts you a two-hour flight away.”

“Yes.”

He didn't soften that.

I appreciated it.

I leaned back.

“What are you thinking?”

Derek rubbed his hands over his face.

“If this were two years ago, I'd already be packing.”

I didn't respond.

He looked at me.

“That isn't supposed to sound noble.”

“Good.”

“It isn't.”

“I know.”

He exhaled.

“I spent most of my life making decisions based on what reduced pressure fastest.”

That was accurate.

“When you got pregnant, leaving reduced pressure.”

“For you.”

“Yes.”

The word sat heavily between us.

He continued.

“When Dad got sick, work used to be the place I went when I didn't want to feel anything.”

I looked at him.

“But when he died, there wasn't enough work.”

“No.”

“I don't want to build my life that way anymore.”

“Then don't.”

He almost laughed.

“You make it sound simple.”

“It isn't simple.”

I folded my arms.

“But you asked me what I think.”

“Yes.”

“I think leaving doesn't automatically mean abandoning Maisie.”

Derek looked surprised.

I continued.

“People move.”

“Yes.”

“Parents travel.”

“Yes.”

“Families adapt.”

He studied my face.

“But?”

“There is one.”

“Of course.”

I looked toward the hallway.

Maisie's bedroom door was closed.

“If you go, the burden of maintaining your relationship with her has to stay yours.”

Derek nodded slowly.

“You don't get to move and then expect me to make sure she calls.”

“Okay.”

“You don't get to say flights are expensive and ask me to split every cost.”

“Okay.”

“You don't get to decide you're lonely and expect her schedule to reorganize around you.”

His face tightened.

“I wouldn't.”

“Maybe not.”

I kept going.

“But distance makes people resent the effort required to stay connected.”

He said nothing.

“I need to know you understand that.”

“I do.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You understand it as an idea.”

He looked down.

“I'm asking whether you're willing to live it.”

That was the real question.

Not Denver.

Not salary.

Effort.

Would Derek continue choosing presence once presence became inconvenient?

He looked at the table for a long time.

Finally he said, “I don't know.”

The honesty surprised me.

It also relieved me.

“I think that's the first useful thing you've said tonight.”

He smiled faintly.

“Thanks.”

“You're welcome.”

We talked until almost midnight.

Alternatives.

Remote work.

Delayed transfer.

Travel schedules.

Whether Maisie could spend longer stretches with him when she was older.

Whether he could negotiate for Seattle.

Whether I would ever consider relocating.

That last question changed the room.

Derek asked it cautiously.

“What if Denver became an option for you too?”

I stared at him.

“Meaning?”

“Not now.”

“Then why are we discussing it?”

“Because I'm trying not to assume the whole sacrifice is mine.”

That stopped me.

Years earlier, Derek had run from responsibility.

Now he was trying to make sure I wasn't quietly assigning all responsibility to him.

I didn't like the question.

That didn't make it unfair.

“I don't want to move.”

“Okay.”

“Seattle is home.”

“I know.”

“My work is here.”

“Yes.”

“My support system is here.”

“I know.”

“Vanessa is here.”

He nodded.

“My parents are four hours away.”

“I know.”

“So no.”

“Okay.”

There was no argument.

That mattered.

Still, I felt defensive.

“Do you think that's selfish?”

“No.”

He answered too quickly.

I narrowed my eyes.

“Derek.”

He sighed.

“I think it means you're asking me to decide whether I want the job more than I want proximity.”

“Yes.”

“And I don't know the answer yet.”

That hurt.

I hated that it hurt.

Because he wasn't choosing between Maisie and nothing.

He was choosing between two real lives.

One offered professional security.

The other offered ordinary fatherhood.

Most people never received choices in clean moral packaging.

I stood.

“You need to decide.”

“I know.”

“Not me.”

“I know.”

“And whatever you decide, don't make Maisie responsible for making you feel better about it.”

His eyes met mine.

“I won't.”

He left.

The next morning, Mom called.

I hadn't told her yet.

Dad apparently had.

I sighed when I saw her name.

“You talked to Dad.”

“He told me.”

“Of course he did.”

“Do you want my opinion?”

I smiled.

“Look at you.”

“I'm learning.”

I thought about it.

“No.”

“Okay.”

She actually stopped.

That surprised me enough that I laughed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Jenna.”

“I expected you to give it anyway.”

Mom was quiet.

Then said, “I used to.”

“Yes.”

“I don't want to anymore.”

We talked about other things.

Maisie's preschool.

Dad's consulting contract.

A recipe Mom wanted to try.

It was almost ten minutes before she returned to Derek.

“What do you need?”

I leaned against the counter.

“I don't know.”

“Company?”

“Maybe.”

“I can do company.”

No advice.

No strategy.

Just presence.

Sometimes change announced itself through what people no longer did.

Derek had two weeks to respond to the offer.

During the first week, he behaved normally.

He picked Maisie up.

He took her to the aquarium.

He brought her home with a stuffed octopus she absolutely did not need.

He never mentioned Denver in front of her.

That bothered me.

Not because I wanted him to burden her.

Because pretending nothing was changing felt dangerous too.

Finally, I asked the counselor.

“When do we tell her?”

“When there is something concrete to tell.”

“So not yet?”

“Not yet.”

“What if he leaves?”

“Then you tell her after the decision.”

I nodded.

“What if he stays?”

“Then she doesn't need to carry a problem that never became hers.”

That stayed with me.

Children did not need every uncertainty adults experienced.

Honesty was not the same as emotional dumping.

The second week, Derek asked to come over again.

He arrived carrying no laptop.

That told me he had decided.

We sat on the couch.

He looked tired.

“What did you do?”

“I declined it.”

The room became completely still.

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He laughed softly.

“That is not the reaction I expected.”

“I need to know.”

Derek leaned forward.

“I negotiated first.”

“For what?”

“Remote.”

“And?”

“No.”

“Seattle office?”

“No openings.”

“Delayed start?”

“Three months.”

“So you declined.”

“Yes.”

I searched his face.

“Because of Maisie?”

“Mostly.”

That word mattered.

Mostly.

Not entirely.

“I also realized I don't want to move.”

He continued.

“I've rebuilt my life here.”

“Okay.”

“My friends are here.”

“Okay.”

“And yes.”

He looked directly at me.

“My daughter is here.”

I didn't know what to say.

Part of me felt relieved.

Another part became angry.

That surprised me.

“You can't use this later.”

Derek frowned.

“Use what?”

“This choice.”

His expression changed.

“I won't.”

“You can't tell her when she's fifteen that you gave up Denver for her.”

“I know.”

“You can't tell me.”

“I won't.”

“You can't turn staying into a debt.”

Derek's face hardened slightly.

“I said I won't.”

I heard the defensiveness.

Then I realized what I was doing.

Punishing him in advance for a manipulation he had not committed.

I stopped.

“Sorry.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“I think that's the first time you've apologized to me in two years.”

“Don't enjoy it.”

He laughed.

I did too.

The tension eased.

Derek leaned back.

“I understand why you're worried.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Maisie's room.

“My dad did that.”

“What?”

“Every sacrifice became evidence.”

I thought about Raymond.

Derek continued.

“He'd say things like, ‘I worked overtime for you kids,’ or ‘I stayed in that job because of you.’”

He shook his head.

“I grew up feeling like I had somehow chosen his life for him.”

That was exactly what I feared for Maisie.

“So don't do that.”

“I won't.”

A week later, Derek found another job.

Lower title than Denver.

Comparable pay to his current position.

Hybrid schedule.

Local.

When he told me, he seemed embarrassed.

“It's not as good.”

“By whose measurement?”

He looked at me.

I continued.

“Less prestige?”

“Yes.”

“Less money?”

“A little.”

“More time?”

“Yes.”

“More stability?”

“Yes.”

“Then maybe your measurement changed.”

He smiled.

“Maybe.”

The first month went smoothly.

Then Derek started picking Maisie up from preschool once a week.

That changed something.

Until then, his fatherhood mostly existed during scheduled blocks.

Weekend visits.

Planned outings.

Time set aside specifically for her.

Preschool pickup introduced
