You address child support. You follow whatever process the court recommends. You don&#39;t show up at my apartment. You don&#39;t contact my family. You don&#39;t post about her. You don&#39;t use anyone else to get information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you do not meet Maisie until I am satisfied you&#39;re not going to disappear her.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Maisie stared back.<\/p>\n<p>For one long second, nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Derek&#39;s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>He did not rush toward her.<\/p>\n<p>He did not say Daddy.<\/p>\n<p>He did not reach for her.<\/p>\n<p>He crouched several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Maisie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hid behind my leg.<\/p>\n<p>Derek swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he placed a small wooden elephant on the floor between them.<\/p>\n<p>Not a giant gift.<\/p>\n<p>Not an attempt to buy affection.<\/p>\n<p>Just an elephant.<\/p>\n<p>Maisie noticed.<\/p>\n<p>She peeked around my knee.<\/p>\n<p>Derek stayed still.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly a minute, she stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>She picked up the wooden elephant.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek&#39;s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maisie hugged it against her chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek smiled.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t forgive him.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t trust him.<\/p>\n<p>But for the first time, I saw something I had not expected.<\/p>\n<p>Patience.<\/p>\n<p>And
