Kyle came from Eugene. I brought Maisie.<\/p>\n<p>Mom opened the door and stared at the four of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kyle held up two pizza boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooting the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom laughed despite herself.<\/p>\n<p>We spent the afternoon sorting the garage.<\/p>\n<p>It was astonishing how much history could accumulate behind one metal door.<\/p>\n<p>School projects.<\/p>\n<p>Broken lamps.<\/p>\n<p>Camping equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas decorations.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes labeled with years none of us remembered packing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad found said.<\/p>\n<p>The garage had become quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Brinn pretended to study another photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle suddenly found the camping equipment fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it started earlier than I realized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something cold moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow early?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter your grandmother got sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was ten then.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had spent nearly a year driving back and forth to care for Grandma.<\/p>\n<p>Dad worked long hours.<\/p>\n<p>Brinn struggled in school.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle was still little.<\/p>\n<p>And I became easy.<\/p>\n<p>That was the word everyone used.<\/p>\n<p>Easy.<\/p>\n<p>I made my own lunches.<\/p>\n<p>Did my homework.<\/p>\n<p>Helped Kyle.<\/p>\n<p>Reminded Dad about school forms.<\/p>\n<p>Learned not to ask for rides if someone else needed something.<\/p>\n<p>I had always remembered those behaviors as evidence of who I was.<\/p>\n<p>Responsible.<\/p>\n<p>Independent.<\/p>\n<p>Mature.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wondered how many had begun as adaptations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have noticed,\u201d Mom said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t make it okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it explains some of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She was not asking me to absolve her.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Dad cleared his throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have noticed too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom glanced at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I liked having a kid I didn&#39;t have to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was rough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bragged about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna never gives us trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna can handle herself.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna is the responsible one.<\/p>\n<p>Each compliment had reinforced the same lesson.<\/p>\n<p>Need less.<\/p>\n<p>Carry more.<\/p>\n<p>Be easier to love.<\/p>\n<p>Maisie toddled toward me carrying a dusty plastic trophy.<\/p>\n<p>I took it from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad squinted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoccer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t play soccer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brinn burst out laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle examined the trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does it say Most Improved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tension broke.<\/p>\n<p>We kept packing.<\/p>\n<p>By sunset, the garage looked half empty.<\/p>\n<p>Mom ordered Chinese food.<\/p>\n<p>We ate on paper plates in the living room because the dining table had already been staged for potential buyers.<\/p>\n<p>After Maisie fell asleep upstairs, Dad brought out coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got an offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked around at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad told her.<\/p>\n<p>It was lower than asking but not insulting.<\/p>\n<p>Mom began pacing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda thinks we should counter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Dad&#39;s face.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted help.<\/p>\n<p>Not money.<\/p>\n<p>Reinforcement.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I did nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Mom noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The invitation to become the deciding vote.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t care?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck hard.<\/p>\n<p>Brinn inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Mom seemed to realize what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>But I answered anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI care enough not to make the decision for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this is exactly what we&#39;ve been trying to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making everything into a lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I&#39;m refusing to become responsible for what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you think she&#39;s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called her before I talked to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted Jenna to tell me what to do because I was scared to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me to talk to my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brinn made a sound suspiciously like a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Dad glared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat down.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you actually want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was such a simple question.<\/p>\n<p>I realized I had almost never heard my parents ask each other that.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat opposite her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom flinched.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want another year of worrying about taxes. I don&#39;t want to keep taking contracts because we&#39;re afraid to leave this house. I don&#39;t want our retirement to disappear into a roof and four bedrooms we don&#39;t use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad asked.<\/p>\n<p>She looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want my children to always know where home is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Brinn leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome isn&#39;t the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle moved beside her.<\/p>\n<p>For once, nobody tried to stop the tears.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation lasted until midnight.<\/p>\n<p>They countered the offer the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>The buyers accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Mom called me afterward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she laughed through her tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I&#39;m relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those feelings could coexist too.<\/p>\n<p>The move was scheduled for September.<\/p>\n<p>Mom and Dad found a smaller townhouse twenty minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>One floor.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny yard.<\/p>\n<p>No enormous tax bill.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sounded almost cheerful.<\/p>\n<p>Mom did not.<\/p>\n<p>Then, during the final week before closing, I received a call from a number I hadn&#39;t seen in almost two years.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Derek.<\/p>\n<p>Maisie&#39;s father.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen until the call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Then it rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time, he left a voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until Maisie was asleep before listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna, it&#39;s Derek. I know I don&#39;t have the right to ask you for anything. I just&#8230; I heard some things. I heard Maisie&#39;s doing well. I&#39;d like to talk.
