Brinn arrived carrying flowers. In those fantasies, she understood everything perfectly. She apologized beautifully. I said something devastating and wise.<\/p>\n<p>Real reconciliation was much messier.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the person who hurt you understood only one piece at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you understood only one piece too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want Maisie growing up like that,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t promise that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you can teach us better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face fell slightly.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you what I need. I can leave when you cross a line. I can decide what Maisie is around.
