found out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had been betraying everybody at once.<\/p>\n<p>She told Daniel Gordon had copies.<\/p>\n<p>She told Mark Daniel was meeting Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>She told Patricia pieces.<\/p>\n<p>She helped Thomas run.<\/p>\n<p>She skimmed Mark\u2019s money.<\/p>\n<p>She seemed less like anyone\u2019s loyal accomplice and more like someone trying to survive every side while profiting from all of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel meet Gordon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNight he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been heading to Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel met Gordon at six.<\/p>\n<p>Then Patricia at seven.<\/p>\n<p>His final evening had been a chain of evidence handoffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Gordon give him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA flash drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer did not know.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paid Gordon ten thousand evidence Mark had authorized Gordon to intimidate people.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe even Walter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark know Daniel had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGordon called him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After selling Mark\u2019s secrets, Gordon sold the information about the sale.<\/p>\n<p>That was his business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mark do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happened on that road, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interview ended hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz returned to Thomas\u2019s backup.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s truck had been searched by Mark after the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Helen searched too.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis later searched.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody found Gordon\u2019s flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s brown envelope had documents but no drive.<\/p>\n<p>His compass held a memory card but not Mercer\u2019s ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would he hide something he got that evening?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Evan answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clothes Daniel wore were returned after the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Mark collected them first.<\/p>\n<p>Then they came to me in a sealed bag.<\/p>\n<p>I had never gone through them carefully.<\/p>\n<p>I could not.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, I placed lining.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside the inner seam near the hem was a small stitched section.<\/p>\n<p>Not factory stitching.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had done it himself.<\/p>\n<p>We opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>A micro flash drive slid into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>Another backup.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had hidden it inside his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz took custody.<\/p>\n<p>The data matched Mercer\u2019s description.<\/p>\n<p>Debt ledgers.<\/p>\n<p>Audio clips.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A list of intimidation targets.<\/p>\n<p>Walter\u2019s name appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>And Evan\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Beside Evan\u2019s
