disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz called him.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis denied owning the company.<\/p>\n<p>The filing used his name and an old address.<\/p>\n<p>Forgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that sound like?\u201d Evan asked quietly.<\/p>\n<p>I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s oldest method.<\/p>\n<p>Use someone else\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p>Make them carry the risk.<\/p>\n<p>But Mark had been under scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had the account access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Rachel be doing what Mark taught her?\u201d I whispered, \u201cGrandma owns a cabin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Helen did.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned, she admitted it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark told her years earlier that he was placing assets in her name for protection against creditors.<\/p>\n<p>She signed documents.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed she never knew where the properties were.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you receive income?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>But one property\u2014the warehouse\u2014mattered.<\/p>\n<p>It sat outside town.<\/p>\n<p>Helen said she had never visited.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas pulled old company shipping logs.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>Once six weeks before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Once two days before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he doing there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz obtained a search warrant.<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse was nearly empty.<\/p>\n<p>Old shelving.<\/p>\n<p>Broken pallets.<\/p>\n<p>Dust.<\/p>\n<p>Then officers found a locked interior room.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were boxes of company documents.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mark\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Personal records.<\/p>\n<p>Bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>And a handwritten ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas recognized the structure immediately.<\/p>\n<p>It tracked money Rachel had taken independently from Mark.<\/p>\n<p>For years.<\/p>\n<p>She had not simply helped him steal.<\/p>\n<p>She had been skimming from the skimmer.<\/p>\n<p>One column listed payments to a person identified only as S.M.<\/p>\n<p>Sal went pale when he saw the initials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had underlined S.M. in his copy of the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it he had written:<\/p>\n<p>Find out who this is before confronting Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Then one final note:<\/p>\n<p>S.M. knows what happened before the crash.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sal.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz agreed the context did not fit.<\/p>\n<p>So who was S.M.?<\/p>\n<p>The answer came from one of Rachel\u2019s photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A man stood beside her outside the warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Tall.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy coat.<\/p>\n<p>Scar along his chin.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Rachel had written:<\/p>\n<p>Sean Mercer \u2013 final payment.<\/p>\n<p>Walter recognized the surname.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGordon Vale worked for Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gambler collector who threatened Walter after Daniel died.<\/p>\n<p>Sean Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>S.M.<\/p>\n<p>Not Sal.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been tracing him too.<\/p>\n<p>And according to Rachel\u2019s
