19 – Thomas Reed Returned With the Missing Minutes From Daniel’s Crash, and His Testimony Changed What We Thought Walter Had Witnessed

Thomas Reed did not look like Walter.

That surprised me when he entered the interview room the following afternoon.

Walter was broad even after illness thinned him.

Thomas was narrow, almost delicate, with wire-framed glasses and hair going gray at the temples.

But the brothers had the same habit when nervous.

Both rubbed the side of the right thumb with the left forefinger.

Thomas saw Walter first.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Walter crossed the room.

He struck Thomas once across the shoulder.

Not hard.

Thomas accepted it.

“You idiot,” Walter said.

“I know.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

Then Walter hugged him.

Evan watched silently.

Thomas cried into his brother’s shoulder.

I looked away.

Some reunions deserved privacy even in rooms full of investigators.

Thomas had been living under his middle name in Oregon.

He repaired bookkeeping systems for small businesses.

He had remarried.

His daughter, now nineteen, knew where he was.

His former wife knew too.

They had hidden the truth from almost everyone else.

“Rachel knew?”

Ruiz asked.

“For the first year.”

“Then?”

“I cut contact.”

“Why?”

“Because I realized she was still talking to Mark.”

Rachel had helped Thomas leave.

That was the part she wanted prosecutors to consider.

The morning after Daniel died, she told Thomas Mark was searching for the backups.

She gave him cash and a prepaid phone.

“She helped you after helping Mark before the crash.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Thomas looked toward the observation glass, though he could not see us.

“Guilt.”

Rachel knew what Mark had done.

She knew Thomas was in danger.

Helping him escape became the one thing she could still do.

“Why didn’t you contact police from Oregon?”

“I didn’t trust them.”

“Because?”

Thomas had evidence Mark knew details from the investigation almost immediately.

After Daniel’s death, Mark told Rachel that Walter had described a male driver.

That information had not yet been released.

Thomas assumed someone inside law enforcement was feeding Mark.

“Was he right?” I asked Ruiz later.

“Possibly not.”

Mark could have learned it from Helen or Rachel.

Or from Curtis after he spoke with investigators.

Thomas had made a reasonable inference from incomplete information.

Then built three years of fear around it.

“What did Thomas see at the crash?” I asked.

Ruiz returned to the interview.

Thomas began carefully.

He had followed Daniel.

Not immediately.

After confronting Mark at the truck, Thomas became worried.

Daniel left first.

Mark followed later with Helen.

Thomas waited.

Then Rachel left separately.

That contradicted some earlier statements because Rachel eventually joined Mark farther down the route.

Thomas followed several minutes behind.

“Why?”

“I wanted to make sure Danny was okay.”

He lost sight of them in traffic.

When he reached the county road, he saw lights ahead.

Daniel’s truck was already down the embankment.

Mark’s SUV stood farther along the shoulder.

Thomas pulled onto a side road before anyone noticed him.

“What did you see?”

“Helen near the embankment.”

“Rachel?”

“Near the SUV.”

“Mark?”

“Down by Danny.”

“Curtis?”

“Not yet.”

Thomas watched from perhaps a hundred yards away.

He was afraid to approach.

He saw Helen climb down.

Then back up.

Rachel moved between the SUV and roadside.

Eventually Curtis arrived.

“Did you see Walter?”

“Yes.”

Walter came later from the opposite direction.

This matched what we had reconstructed.

“What happened when Walter arrived?”

“Mark had already left with Curtis.”

“Then Rachel and Helen?”

“Gone.”

“So nobody was there.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Mark came back.”

The room went still.

“How?”

“On foot.”

Apparently Curtis drove Mark only a short distance.

Mark ordered him to stop near an access road.

Then Mark walked through the trees back toward Daniel’s truck.

“Why?”

“Records.”

“How do you know?”

“I heard him later.”

Thomas moved closer after Walter went down the embankment.

He remained hidden near the tree line.

Walter was focused on Daniel.

Mark approached from the opposite side.

“Did Walter see him?”

“No.”

Walter looked stunned when told later.

“I swear I didn’t.”

Thomas believed him.

The road was dark.

Rain heavy.

Walter was below grade.

Mark stayed behind Daniel’s truck.

“What did he do?”

“Searched the cab.”

My hands tightened.

While Walter tried to keep Daniel alive, Mark returned for evidence.

“Did he find anything?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I confronted him.”

Thomas stepped from the trees.

Mark nearly attacked him.

Thomas told him to leave Daniel alone.

Mark demanded to know whether Thomas had taken the records.

Thomas denied it.

Then Mark threatened his daughter.

“What exactly?”

“He said, ‘You want Sophie growing up without a father too?’”

Ruiz paused.

“Too?”

Thomas nodded.

“I remember the word.”

Mark had already accepted Daniel might die.

Maybe he knew the injuries were severe.

Maybe he intended the threat more directly.

Either interpretation was ugly.

“What did you do?”

“I told him the police were coming.”

“Were they?”

“I heard sirens.”

Mark fled through the trees.

Thomas did too.

“Why didn’t you stay?”

“I was terrified.”

He drove home.

Copied remaining data.

Called Walter.

Then disappeared.

“Did Daniel see you?”

Thomas’s face changed.

“I think so.”

“How?”

“When I confronted Mark, Danny moved.”

Walter had been searching for the phone.

Daniel was conscious.

Thomas came close enough to see him through the broken passenger window.

“What did he say?”

Thomas struggled.

“Two words.”

I felt Evan grip my hand.

“What words?”

“Get Evan.”

I stopped breathing.

Thomas had never met Evan properly.

He knew who Daniel meant.

“What did you think he wanted?”

“I thought he wanted me to get his son away from Mark.”

Evan’s eyes filled.

“Why didn’t you?”

Thomas looked toward the glass again.

“I tried.”

He called our house the next morning.

Mark answered.

Thomas hung up.

He called Sal.

No answer.

Then Rachel warned him to run.

“I’m sorry.”

Evan wiped his eyes angrily.

“Everybody says that.”

Thomas nodded.

“I know.”

“Dad told you to get me.”

“Yes.”

“And you left.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I believe anything else?”

Thomas did not defend himself.

“You shouldn’t because I ask you to.”

That answer slowed Evan’s anger.

Thomas continued.

“You should believe what can be checked.”

Daniel would have approved.

Thomas gave investigators his original phone from that night.

He had kept it powered off for years.

Forensic technicians recovered photographs.

Call logs.

And one audio recording.

Thomas had accidentally activated his phone’s voice memo while confronting Mark near Daniel’s truck.

The sound was poor.

Rain dominated.

Walter’s voice could be heard below.

Then Mark.

Then Thomas.

Mark demanded the records.

Thomas denied having them.

Mark threatened Sophie.

Then Daniel’s voice.

Weak.

Barely audible.

“Get Evan.”

Thomas said, “I will.”

Daniel answered something.

The technicians enhanced it.

We listened repeatedly.

Finally the words emerged.

“Don’t let Mark raise him.”

Evan turned toward me.

“What does that mean?”

I did not know.

Mark was his uncle.

Why would Daniel think Mark might raise Evan?

Then Margaret answered.

She had been brought in after Thomas’s testimony.

“Your will.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Daniel changed his will.”

I stared.

“He never told me.”

“He did it after he learned about Mark’s theft.”

Daniel’s old will named Mark as alternate guardian for Evan if both Daniel and I died.

A common family choice made years earlier.

Daniel changed it.

“Who did he name?”

“Sal.”

Sal looked stunned.

“I didn’t know.”

Margaret said Daniel had prepared the amendment but had not yet filed the final copy with our attorney.

He gave Margaret a draft.

Another hidden paper.

“Why would Daniel worry Mark would raise Evan if I was alive?”

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas did.

“Because Mark told him you were next.”

My skin went cold.

“When?”

“In the loading bay.”

The audio we heard earlier had ended before that exchange.

Thomas had another recording segment.

Mark, angry after Thomas threatened to call Daniel, said:

Danny thinks he can take everything. Company. Mom. The kid. Wait until his wife learns what she signed. She’ll lose the house, lose custody, lose all of it.

It may have been intimidation.

It may have been empty cruelty.

But Daniel heard enough of Mark’s threats that by the roadside, injured and dying, he was still thinking about Evan’s safety.

Ruiz asked Thomas whether Mark had ever threatened me physically.

“No.”

That distinction mattered.

But financial ruin could destabilize custody, housing, everything.

Mark understood systems.

He knew how to turn paperwork into weapons.

Thomas had one final piece.

Daniel gave him instructions two days before the crash.

If Mark tried to seize control after Daniel’s death, Thomas was to find the original shareholder ledger.

“Where?”

Thomas did not know.

Daniel only said:

Dad hid it where Mark’s first lie started.

Laura understood immediately.

“The old deposit box.”

The account Mark opened at sixteen using stolen customer checks.

That bank had merged twice but still maintained archival safe-deposit storage.

Records showed Robert rented a box there shortly after discovering the theft.

The box remained active.

Annual fees had been automatically paid from an old trust account.

The authorized names were Robert Bennett and Daniel Bennett.

Both dead.

Access required legal process.

Ruiz obtained an order.

Inside were original records proving Mark framed Laura.

But beneath them was something none of us expected.

A sealed paternity test.

Robert Bennett was not Mark’s biological father.

Margaret had known.

Robert had known.

And according to a handwritten note attached to the results, Mark had discovered the truth at sixteen.

The same year he framed Laura.

The first lie had not started with stolen money.

It started with the secret Mark believed could remove him from the Bennett family entirely.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Paternity Secret Explained Mark’s Lifelong Fear of Losing the Bennett Name, but Margaret’s Confession Revealed Who His Father Really Was

Thomas Reed did not look like Walter.
