It was the same controlled anger I had heard when he confronted Margaret. He had reached the point where apologies without explanations no longer impressed him.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled a chair closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart with Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter stared at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Reed was eleven years younger than him. Where Walter drifted between delivery jobs, warehouse work, and construction, Thomas preferred numbers. Their daughter was living with her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told them nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe abandoned his child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter bristled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought staying away protected her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Protection.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard the word so many times that it had lost all innocence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter\u2019s face fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s former wife later received anonymous threats.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs of their daughter arriving at school.<\/p>\n<p>A note under the windshield wiper.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stopped calling entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the wife and daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked the question I had been waiting for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Thomas alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter took a long time to answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last confirmed contact was almost three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>One month after Daniel\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas mailed Walter a postcard.<\/p>\n<p>No return address.<\/p>\n<p>On the back:<\/p>\n<p>Tell Sal the books are safe. Tell Danny\u2019s family I\u2019m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had kept it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course he had.<\/p>\n<p>He kept paper.<\/p>\n<p>A nurse retrieved his old duffel from storage.<\/p>\n<p>Walter searched through a plastic folder until he found the postcard.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz placed it in an evidence sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>The picture showed a lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could be anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe,\u201d Ruiz said.<\/p>\n<p>On the front, beneath the lighthouse photograph, tiny print identified the location.<\/p>\n<p>Cape Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>A coastal town nearly six hundred miles away.<\/p>\n<p>The postmark came from a neighboring county.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz began making calls.<\/p>\n<p>I turned back to Walter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came with the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark answered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater Thomas told me not to contact you again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said somebody inside the investigation was feeding Mark information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompany?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why trust Sal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Daniel trusted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Daniel\u2019s final note.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one person I still trust at the company. Sal knows who.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had separated knowledge deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>Sal knew Thomas was trustworthy.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had the books.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz had some copies.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia had Victor\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret held the partnership agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had built redundancy around people who did not know the whole plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe expected evidence to disappear,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe designed around that possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked down at the compass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad made backups of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase was strange but accurate.<\/p>\n<p>If one person failed, another might still carry a piece.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, almost everyone had failed in some way.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked Walter whether Thomas ever mentioned where he stored the backup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny phrase? Place? Person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked about a bicycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bicycle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter frowned, searching his memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas asked whether I remembered where Daniel kept his first bike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s first bicycle had belonged to him as a teenager.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret kept old family things in a detached garage behind her house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Thomas ask that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz called Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, she still had Daniel\u2019s old bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>Rusty.<\/p>\n<p>Blue.<\/p>\n<p>Flat tires.<\/p>\n<p>It hung from hooks in the garage rafters.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had touched it in years.<\/p>\n<p>Officers met us there.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret unlocked the garage.<\/p>\n<p>The smell of oil, cardboard, and old wood filled the air.<\/p>\n<p>Evan spotted the bicycle first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had once told me about it.<\/p>\n<p>He saved an entire summer to buy it secondhand.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that was why he had been so proud when Evan began wanting a bicycle badly enough to work for one.<\/p>\n<p>An officer lowered it.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing looked unusual.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evan crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He touched the hollow end of the seat post.<\/p>\n<p>A rubber plug sealed it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a tightly rolled piece of paper wrapped in plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Not a drive.<\/p>\n<p>A note.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz read it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Danny said if I had to run, use the place Laura should have had.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody understood at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret sat down hard on an old trunk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura\u2019s bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bedroom Robert emptied after throwing Laura out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remodeled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat became of her things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stared toward the rear of the garage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert boxed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed.<\/p>\n<p>Three cardboard boxes sat behind an old dresser.<\/p>\n<p>LAURA.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were schoolbooks, photographs, clothes, trophies, and a wooden jewelry chest.<\/p>\n<p>No drives.<\/p>\n<p>Evan kept searching.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the second box he found a yearbook.<\/p>\n<p>Something rattled inside its hollowed pages.<\/p>\n<p>Two small external drives.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had hidden the company backup among the belongings of the sister Mark had erased from the family.<\/p>\n<p>A place Mark would never voluntarily search because doing so would mean acknowledging Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz took custody.<\/p>\n<p>The data required forensic imaging before examination.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>Late that night, she called.<\/p>\n<p>The drives were readable.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had copied nearly everything.<\/p>\n<p>And one folder had been created the morning after Daniel died.<\/p>\n<p>Its name:<\/p>\n<p>IF MARK SAYS IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were accounting files.<\/p>\n<p>Emails.<\/p>\n<p>Security-camera exports.<\/p>\n<p>And a video.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp was from the company parking lot forty-eight minutes before Daniel\u2019s crash.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood beside his SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was near the passenger door.<\/p>\n<p>Helen stood several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>There was no audio.<\/p>\n<p>But the images were clear.<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened the rear cargo area.<\/p>\n<p>He removed a long metal object.<\/p>\n<p>A tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked to Daniel\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n<p>He crouched beside the front wheel.<\/p>\n<p>The camera angle did not show exactly what he did.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty seconds later, he returned to the SUV carrying the tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel left the parking lot twenty minutes afterward.<\/p>\n<p>The crash had not begun on the county road.<\/p>\n<p>Mark may have tampered with Daniel\u2019s truck before following him.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28766\">Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Backup Video Showed Mark Beneath Daniel\u2019s Truck Before the Crash, but the Mechanic\u2019s Report Revealed Someone Else Had Stopped Him<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walter did not deny knowing Thomas.
