late.<\/p>\n<p>As officers prepared to leave, Patricia approached Evan.<\/p>\n<p>She did not touch him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father talked about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked Orange writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had died three years before Evan wanted that bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot your current bike. An old one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained.<\/p>\n<p>During one meeting, Daniel told her about the first bicycle Evan learned to ride.<\/p>\n<p>He described running behind him with one hand on the seat until Evan yelled at him to let go.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t let go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I turned around and saw his hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, Daniel existed between them not as a victim or investigator, but as a father jogging behind a child\u2019s bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>Then Patricia handed Ruiz a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this with the file Daniel was supposed to receive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz opened it under evidence protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single page.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had written it the afternoon he died.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was meeting someone who could confirm the history behind Mark\u2019s financial crimes.<\/p>\n<p>He said the situation was worse than he had told me.<\/p>\n<p>He apologized for keeping me outside it.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the line that stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>If Mark learns where I\u2019m going tonight, Helen told him.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had suspected her before the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Below that:<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens, don\u2019t assume Mom knows the whole truth either.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel distrusted both mothers.<\/p>\n<p>Then, at the bottom:<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one person I still trust at the company.
