She wanted the truth to be complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, strangely, I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Truth did not need heroes.<\/p>\n<p>It needed accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark know Patricia planned to meet Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tighten.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>One person telling Mark exactly enough to make him dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was asking where Daniel was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz cut her off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did think. records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know Mark had been drinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know he was angry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know he had threatened Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The weight of her own answers settled over her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think he would hit him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz remained quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cI swear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched through the observation glass.<\/p>\n<p>This was the problem with everyone\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n<p>They had each imagined a boundary Mark would not cross.<\/p>\n<p>Then when he crossed it, they adjusted the boundary and protected themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel told Ruiz that Patricia stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, I believed Rachel might be telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody else had warned Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>The question was who.<\/p>\n<p>We left the station after dark.<\/p>\n<p>Evan had spent the afternoon with Sal and Walter.<\/p>\n<p>When I arrived at the hospital, I found the two of them playing cards.<\/p>\n<p>Walter was cheating badly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have three kings,\u201d Evan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched you put one in your sleeve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an accusation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sticking out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter tucked the card farther into his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCircumstantial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>Both of them looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing,\u201d Evan said.<\/p>\n<p>But he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat answer has become illegal in this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sal went downstairs for food.<\/p>\n<p>Walter gathered the cards.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cThey find the woman?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know her name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>Evan noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know Patricia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter put the cards down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his chin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman who came to me after the crash said her name was Pat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman he had described.<\/p>\n<p>Blond.<\/p>\n<p>Well dressed.<\/p>\n<p>BrightWay jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she ask you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Daniel said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I saw who hit him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I saw a man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she show you a picture?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave me money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sleeping in my van then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor your silence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter became defensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me to go somewhere safe because people might come asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever gave his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescribe him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter did.<\/p>\n<p>Late forties at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Broken nose.<\/p>\n<p>Dark tattoo along the neck.<\/p>\n<p>He found Walter two days after Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to know whether Daniel had said Mark\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Walter lied.<\/p>\n<p>He said Daniel barely spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I stopped trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the man do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound like nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed me a photograph of my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter had never mentioned having a daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a kid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe died five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man knew where she worked.<\/p>\n<p>He told Walter accidents happened to people who talked too much.<\/p>\n<p>Walter disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Changed shelters.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped using his old phone.<\/p>\n<p>That explained why investigators could not find him later.<\/p>\n<p>It explained how his statement vanished without him pushing harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Patricia send the man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz arrived within forty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Walter repeated everything.<\/p>\n<p>She searched old organized-crime and debt-collection records.<\/p>\n<p>The description produced several possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Then Walter identified a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Vale.<\/p>\n<p>A collector connected to illegal gambling operations.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s gambling lenders.<\/p>\n<p>Not Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had sent someone to intimidate Walter.<\/p>\n<p>Or one of Mark\u2019s creditors had acted to protect their own exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, the cover-up had begun immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Gordon have warned Patricia now?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another dead end.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evan asked a simple question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Patricia give Walter money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she wanted him quiet, why warn him somebody else might come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked at Walter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did Patricia say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter thought carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018If anybody asks whether Daniel named someone, say no until you know who you\u2019re talking to.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not a threat.<\/p>\n<p>It was a warning.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia may have been trying to protect Walter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know Mark caused the crash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ask you to lie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only to be careful.<\/p>\n<p>The shape of Patricia shifted again.<\/p>\n<p>Blackmailer.<\/p>\n<p>Infiltrator.<\/p>\n<p>Witness after the fact.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly someone who had tried, imperfectly, to prevent another person from being silenced.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>An officer had found Patricia\u2019s car.<\/p>\n<p>It was parked at a bus terminal eighty miles away.<\/p>\n<p>No Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Security footage showed her entering the terminal with a suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>But she never boarded a bus.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she exited through a side door twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>A second camera captured her getting into a pickup.<\/p>\n<p>The license plate was readable.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz ran it.<\/p>\n<p>The truck belonged to Laura Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the result.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had told us she had not seen Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>She had lied.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz called her.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Officers were sent to Laura\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evan said, \u201cMaybe they\u2019re not running from police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe they\u2019re going somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo do what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinish what Dad was trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been bringing fractured pieces of his family together before he died.<\/p>\n<p>Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Old crimes.<\/p>\n<p>New crimes.<\/p>\n<p>What place connected all of them?<\/p>\n<p>The answer came from Sal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Patricia wants the truth about her father, she\u2019d go back where it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original building had burned, but the property remained.<\/p>\n<p>The rebuilt structure had been sold years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The rear foundation and storage cellar survived the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz checked ownership.<\/p>\n<p>The land now belonged to a holding company.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s registered agent was Laura Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had bought the property four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Before Daniel found her.<\/p>\n<p>Before he reopened the family\u2019s secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz contacted local officers.<\/p>\n<p>They reached the property shortly after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s pickup was there.<\/p>\n<p>So was Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Neither woman resisted.<\/p>\n<p>But they were not alone.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the surviving cellar, officers found a third person.<\/p>\n<p>An elderly man.<\/p>\n<p>Thin.<\/p>\n<p>Oxygen tubing beneath his nose.<\/p>\n<p>His identification said Victor Shaw.<\/p>\n<p>The man everyone believed had died twelve years
