Other people made their own choices. What happened is not his responsibility because he didn\u2019t predict all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame thing you told me about the storage code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou use the same speech a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a mother. We recycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That earned a brief smile.<\/p>\n<p>At three in the afternoon, Ruiz called.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Hayes had returned her message.<\/p>\n<p>She agreed to speak by video first.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked whether I wanted to be present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time, I did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>An hour she found payments to a man named Victor Shaw.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz wrote the name down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hoped you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody did.<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued.<\/p>\n<p>Victor received regular cash-equivalent payments for nearly fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>The payments began before Mark\u2019s first known theft.<\/p>\n<p>They continued after Robert died.<\/p>\n<p>Mark took them over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to find Evan.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>Laura studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour dad called me the week before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said when this was over, he wanted us all to meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou. Your mom. Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted you to know you had an aunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he tell me then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wanted to finish fixing the mess first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan gave a sad little laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura smiled through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the call ended, Ruiz opened the files.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Shaw\u2019s name appeared repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Cashier\u2019s checks.<\/p>\n<p>A lease.<\/p>\n<p>One photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The image showed Robert Bennett standing beside a younger man outside the original company workshop.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Daniel had written:<\/p>\n<p>Victor Shaw.
