He smiled when he said it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe smiled?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you\u2019d forgive him once he brought doughnuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound escaped Evan that was almost a laugh and almost something else.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel always bought doughnuts when he was late.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside my son.<\/p>\n<p>Walter reached toward the compass on the bedside table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI borrowed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I gave it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter held the compass out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019m giving it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>This time, he did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later Detective Ruiz arrived.<\/p>\n<p>She carried a sealed evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was the brown envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Even through plastic, I recognized Daniel\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>My name covered the front.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz explained that Curtis had surrendered it voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>The documents would be processed before I could handle them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened with Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, he\u2019s being interviewed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArrested?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you where that will go yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause showing up at a building isn\u2019t proof he caused your husband\u2019s crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the answer because it was correct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she went there to persuade Curtis to stop making false accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked about the envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may move more slowly than you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband died three years ago. It already moved slowly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She accepted that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve only done a preliminary review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She listed what they had found.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of loan documents.<\/p>\n<p>Bank transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Emails between Mark and my mother.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten timeline Daniel appeared to have made.<\/p>\n<p>And a short note addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I read that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.
