That\u2019s why I called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked wounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help us understand,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>My son crouched beside the scattered receipts but did not pick them up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met him behind the diner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The timing hit me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Almost exactly as long as Evan had been working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was looking through the recycling,\u201d Evan continued. \u201cI thought he was stealing something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s cheeks reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe apologized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about that embarrassed him more than if the man had yelled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe saw my sweatshirt. The school one with my last name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked whether Daniel was my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The compass suddenly felt heavier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he know your father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was there when Dad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For three years, I had remembered Daniel\u2019s last telephone call in pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Rain striking metal.<\/p>\n<p>His breath coming too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>His voice telling me there had been an accident.<\/p>\n<p>Help was coming.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel asking for Evan.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered putting the phone into our ten-year-old son\u2019s hands without understanding that those might be the last words they ever exchanged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Walter have to do with that night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe found Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>This time I took the chair.<\/p>\n<p>Evan explained that Walter had once driven a delivery van. He had come along the county road after the collision and seen Daniel\u2019s truck down the embankment.<\/p>\n<p>His phone had no power.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped another motorist and sent that driver for help.<\/p>\n<p>Then he climbed down to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s phone had fallen under the seat,\u201d Evan said. \u201cWalter found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear the call again.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I remembered something I had almost forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>A second voice.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Male.<\/p>\n<p>Telling Daniel he was there.<\/p>\n<p>Telling him not to rush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard him too, didn\u2019t you?\u201d Evan asked.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know Walter was really that person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew what Dad said to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s last conversation with his son had never appeared in any article or report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me Dad said I should keep building things even when they fall down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unfinished model bridge flashed into my mind.<\/p>\n<p>It had remained on our dining-room table for months after the funeral because neither of us could bear to move it.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for Evan.<\/p>\n<p>He resisted for half a heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>Then he collapsed against me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held the back of his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor not telling you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer came into my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were getting better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were sleeping again. You stopped crying where you thought I couldn\u2019t hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou started playing music in the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He had been measuring my recovery.<\/p>\n<p>While I believed I was protecting him, he had been quietly protecting me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought talking about the accident would make you sad again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, Evan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t ask me for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you went back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had been living in an abandoned maintenance shed beyond the old baseball field.<\/p>\n<p>The creek.<\/p>\n<p>The mud.<\/p>\n<p>The torn sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Everything rearranged itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that where you fell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy were you there in the rain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis blankets got wet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Evan explained the rest reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had lost his delivery job after his health deteriorated. Then he lost his rented room. He had been trying to navigate assistance programs while sleeping in the shed and carrying most of his belongings in plastic tubs.<\/p>\n<p>The pharmacy bags were his.<\/p>\n<p>Evan had paid for the refills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your wages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocks. Phone minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA motel when it got cold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money in your bedroom marked ROOM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bicycle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can get the bike later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence cut through me.<\/p>\n<p>Every week he had walked past the thing he wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Every week he had told me he was almost there.<\/p>\n<p>He had been saving toward something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much of your pay have you spent on Walter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his thumb against his palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sal turned toward the sink.<\/p>\n<p>I could see his jaw working.<\/p>\n<p>I raised Daniel\u2019s compass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Walter have this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t want my money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him he could keep the compass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil I paid him back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked bewildered that I needed to ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor staying with Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the compass into his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not owe anyone for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His fingers closed around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not sound convinced.<\/p>\n<p>I bent closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelping somebody is good. Going alone to a flooded creek at night is not. You could have been badly hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t leave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not telling you to leave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His head came up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you to get me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>The burden did not disappear, but for the first time I saw him consider sharing it.<\/p>\n<p>Sal explained why he had called.<\/p>\n<p>Evan had asked for another advance.<\/p>\n<p>When Sal questioned him, Evan tried to prove he had not wasted the earlier money. He opened his backpack. The pharmacy bags and receipts came out.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sal saw the cash.<\/p>\n<p>He assumed someone was exploiting him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I,\u201d I admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s shoulders folded.<\/p>\n<p>I took his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why you tell adults. When we don\u2019t know, we guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he glanced toward the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew that look now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was supposed to go back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Walter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached for the folded notice.<\/p>\n<p>The old field buildings were scheduled to be secured.<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside had to be removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Walter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he had another place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t believe him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow sick is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretty sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet your things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you angry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. And worried. Those can happen together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to Walter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sal already had his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The abandoned baseball field was less than ten minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>The path behind it was muddy enough that every step pulled at my shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Evan moved too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the trees, we saw the shed.<\/p>\n<p>Its door was open.<\/p>\n<p>Evan froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he ran.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were a folding chair, a sleeping bag, canned food, and two plastic tubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Sal\u2019s flashlight moved across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>A man lay beside one of the tubs.<\/p>\n<p>Evan dropped beside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called emergency services.<\/p>\n<p>Walter stirred weakly.<\/p>\n<p>His breathing was shallow.<\/p>\n<p>Evan gripped his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI brought my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter\u2019s eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>They moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2019s wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He squeezed Evan\u2019s fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics arrived minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>As they lifted Walter, his hand caught my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue tin. In the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell me later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His grip tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I found it beneath a sweater.<\/p>\n<p>At the hospital, after Walter disappeared behind treatment-room doors, Evan sat beside me clutching Daniel\u2019s compass.<\/p>\n<p>Sal brought drinks none of us touched.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the blue tin.<\/p>\n<p>There were photographs.<\/p>\n<p>An old work badge.<\/p>\n<p>And a letter sealed inside plastic.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Below my name was a date.<\/p>\n<p>The morning after Daniel died.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded the page.<\/p>\n<p>Walter introduced himself as the man who had stayed with Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached a sentence that made the waiting room disappear around me.<\/p>\n<p>Walter said he had told an officer what he witnessed, but the statement later read back to him was different.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been conscious.<\/p>\n<p>He had spoken before Walter found his phone.<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter, my husband had insisted that what happened on the road was not accidental.<\/p>\n<p>Evan touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached the final lines.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had recognized the man who climbed from the other vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere in the police account of my husband\u2019s death, that identification had vanished.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28751\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: A Three-Year-Old Letter Named No Suspect, but the Man in Walter\u2019s Hospital Room Recognized Someone From Our Family<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The diner kitchen seemed to shrink around us. \u201cWho is Walter?\u201d I asked again.
