Then Tom wanted out. Walter bought his share and eventually renamed the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHail Mechanical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had built his success on top of a failure he had hidden from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy bring us here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Walter came here three months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me about Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>Helen ignored that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter said he had spent years helping you because he recognized himself in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The missing reason.<\/p>\n<p>Not just love for me.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had seen his younger self in Mark\u2019s bad decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Every rescue had been partly an attempt to give Mark the second chance Thomas and Mom had given him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad think Mark could change?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Helen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he also said he had forgotten the most important part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody rescued Walter from the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas made him tell Evelyn. Evelyn made him sell things. The bank took equipment. Employees knew payroll had been late.
