furious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if it mattered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that is something his doctors would have to assess, not us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I would not absolve him of what he had done.<\/p>\n<p>I would not convict him of what he had not.<\/p>\n<p>Both mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy tell me this now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you asked for something you hadn\u2019t discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>For once, he had done exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>No document forced him.<\/p>\n<p>No witness had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>No statement sat on the table.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first voluntary truth.<\/p>\n<p>It did not repair us.<\/p>\n<p>But I noticed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He seemed nine-thirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was upright.<\/p>\n<p>Walking.<\/p>\n<p>Alive after Mark left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he seem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormal enough to complain that the newspaper carrier missed the porch again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>That was Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went inside. Around eleven-thirty I noticed his garage door was still open.
